crowderm (275), Recklinghausen, Germany Apr 12, 2008 Pours a deep, dark black, with a very creamy mocha head. Wow, this is a good looking beer. The aroma is mostly bitter roasted malts, with some chocolate and coffee present too. Maybe some mild citrus hops too? The flavor is quite bitter - there is a definite hop presence when the beer first hits the tongue, mostly piney. A bitter roasted malt flavor hits next, fading into a surprisingly dry chocolate/toffee finish. A very good beer, but not my favorite imperial stout. mike1977ok (633), Netherlands Apr 12, 2008 Pours thick and syrupy topped with an espresso like head. Roasted malt aroma. Flavour begins with slightly burnt roasted malts with a smokey edge. Later, hints of aniseed come through. Some hops hidden in the finish that have a bitter, drying effect.
MaltOMeal (642), Land of Sugar, Texas, USA Apr 11, 2008 bomber. This was dark with a finger-sized, sparkling brown head which dissipated quickly except at edge. Good, uneven lacing. Nose was roasted malt, chocolate and coffee. Taste was chocolate with the same roastiness of the nose and coffee. The mouthfeel was thick with some dry ash and a bitter chocolate aftertaste. Not as complex as the Oak Aged, but still very good. kassner (429), Wexford, Pennsylvania, USA Apr 9, 2008 Had this beer in DC, bottle from Whole Foods. Really compares well to my Standard StormKing. Black red, full of hops and fragerences. Nice head with Red undertones, drinks well , full of resins, malts and hops, but finishes with only a pleasant bitterness. Great with a big cheese. changeup45 (782), Orlando, Florida, USA Apr 7, 2008 Updated: Aug 24, 2008Pours a black color topped with a nice thick deep brown head. The head does settle down to small patches on top. Roasted malt aroma with toffee and molasses backed with some hops. Mouthfeel is rich, heavy and very full. Flavor starts with roasted bitter malts with some burned dark chocolate and toffee. It finishes with some bitter hops and a lot of bold black coffee which can be tasted in the aftertaste for a long time. A bit dry and warming. There isn’t necessarily an alcoholic rush but the flavors are bold, bitter and complex and it is evident that this beer is high in abv. I loved sampling this beer. It’s probably not going to be a regular for me and I doubt I want too many at one seating but this beer was quite a bit of fun. I have a bottle of the Oak Aged version so I look forward to that one. MatSciGuy (629), Rosemount, Minnesota, USA Apr 6, 2008 Updated: Oct 31, 2008[bottle] Pours a very deep black with a modest tan head. Aroma is roasted barley, some hops, and a little chocolate. Taste was as the smell, with some astringency from the malt. I like this one better than the Oak Aged version. HughConway (364), Alabama, USA Apr 6, 2008 Bottle. Pours black as crude with thick brown foam. Spicy fruit hop aroma. Flavour starts sweet and fades to deep chocolaty malt. Better than the Oak Aged Version Gusgus (176), Mölndal, Sweden Apr 6, 2008 Bottle BB 11 -08. Pours pitch black with dark brown foam. Very syrupy. Sweet aroma. Oranges, egg white, cocoa, egg nogg, grape, pine, lemon, flowery hops, tar, licorice. Sweet flavor of lemon and lime, grape, pine, tar and licorice. Very hoppy flavor.
