Very thick and very dark brown to black body, with a wonderful ruby tint, big fluffy brown head. Lots of roasted malts in the flavor, coffee, chocolate, ends on a bitter roasty note. Very creamy and balanced. dchmela (1458), Orlando, Florida, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 3/5 | 18/20 | Jun 4, 2007 Pours out thick and black with a thick dark head. Chocolate, toffee, & expresso in the nose. I know even more flavors come out when this wams up a bit. Taste has a coffee dryness/biterness to it, lots of hops. Once it starts to warm up, you start to getting a piney, woodsy aftertaste. I also get a little white grapefruit, too. This is a real sippin’ beer, you feel that each sip is going to offer you something new and it usually does. Very complex, a carnival of flavors. Awesome beer from a great brewery. Knock over innocent bystanders to get this beer. GreatLibations (1454), Last Supper, Arizona, USA
| 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Oct 20, 2006 Pours black as coal w/ a medium sized thick, creamy froth. Aroma is full of chocolate cakebread. Full nectar w/ mellow residual effers. Flavors of blackened steak and german chocolate cakebread puch you in the face right at the opening bell. As you are K.O.’d and falling other flavors come to mind as your life flashes by. Espresso, iodine, leather, sourdough, big fat day old charred coffee, tar, coconut. BAM! you hit the floor and the huge bitterness drills your palate to finish you off. This is a HUGE style. Malty sweetness meets a severe charred hop twitch. Submit you fool the Yeti cries. The intensity here is in the same league as Mephistopheles. You almost want to run from it. The oak aged version is a tad more tame and refined. This is the bad boy! | 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Sep 7, 2003 A thick, deep brown that is so dark it appears fully black. The head was the colour of cocoa powder and lasted throughout the beer, leaving decent lacing down the side of the glass. The aroma was strong and full. Flourless chocolate cake, two shots of espresso and bitter hops. Fully bodied and warming with the almost 10% alcohol. The flavor was nice, dark chocolate, burnt coffee and bitter hops. Very faint vinous notes sprang up from time to time. All in all, this was a tasty beer that, with the addition of more vinous character and a better meshing of flavor, could have been outstanding. holdenn (1446), Chicago, Illinois, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Apr 18, 2007 22 oz bomber from West Lake View Liquors. We horizontaled (is that a verb?) this with its oaked brother. Pours with a creamy and soapy tan head on top of thick blackness. Its too cold at first and it takes a few minutes before that aroma comes out: bitter/sweet chocolate, hops, carmel, and molasses. Bitter chocolate, roasted, creamy, and green hops come out of the flavor. Next to the oak, this one isn’t quite as good, but its not that far off either. The oaked is richer and more complex but this stands on its own as a fine imperial stout. robinvboyer (1444), Sturgeon Falls, Ontario, Canada
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Sep 10, 2008 Incredibly black pour, and a thick creamy brown head. Aroma of insanely roasted malt, lots of coffee, and some chocolate, and a nice tinge of smoke, and soy sauce. Flavour is intense, and very bitter. Lots of roasted malt, and loads of coffee, with a huge burnt aftertaste. Extremely bitter finish with a lingering coffee note, wow, intense, and complex. Borresteijn (1442), Amsterdam, Netherlands

Great aroma of chocolate, roasted malts/coffee, some hops, and more chocolate. Taste is very rich, with creamy chocolate, burnt coffee and a hoppy finish. Despite the high ABV just little alcohol is noticed. Mouthfeel is oily and syrupy. Very, very good. asheft (1438), Marburg, Germany

Fruity mocha and butterscotchy oak aroma that doesn’t have the usual oaky vanilla. Black, opaque, with brown foam cover. Salty and sour, intense dark malt, with sherry notes, but strangely no chocolate or coffee in the flavour. Medium body and moderately astringent.
