Flavor reminds me of sweet molasses with dark chocolate and coffee. Very sweet but with a surprisingly bitter finish. I prefer the Oak Aged version. AgentSteve (1378), SF Bay Area, California, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Mar 24, 2008 Pours almost black with a thick, pancake colored head that lingers. Nose is comlex, with chocolate malt, roasted coffee, and interesting pine hops. Mouthfeel is smooth and creamy. Flavor is a bit spicy, roasted bitter coffee, and semi sweet chocolate. The finish is like an IIPA, with bitter pine hops. Quite a complex brew. JCapriotti (1378), Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 16/20 | Oct 31, 2004 I’ve seen dark beers before, but this has to be the darkest. NO light is seen through it. Very brown head to.. a bit creamy but not much of it. Thick roasted aroma with coffee, chocolate, and various fruit hints (including cherry). Taste... nice and thick with roasted malt... slight smoke hints, cherry, chocolate, coffee. Quite bitter as well, but the extreme amount of everything else sort of makes it a "general hop noise". Nice that it isn’t overly sweet. Smooth oily palate. Its quite big. LaChad (1375), San Francisco, California, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 16/20 | Aug 11, 2004 Bottle. Utterly opaque, big tan head. Not that much of an aroma compared with what I expected - it didn’t impress, but the deep roasty flavor and very thick, satisfying mouthfeel more than made up for it. Nice example of the style. igneous1 (1374), Davenport, Iowa, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | May 31, 2004 opaque, very thick, deep brown head, looks exactly like the freeminer deep shaft stout. aroma is mild roast, slightly chalky, flavor is loaded with hops, quite bitter, lots of chalk, roastiness and bitter chocolate...fair amount of alcohol...i think this bad boy could stand too soften, but i’m rating on it’s potential. diabel (1372), Aarschot, Belgium

Great nose of malts: nuts, chocolate, coffee, ... Lightly sweet, moderately bitter initial flavour. Somewhat acetic. Lightly sweet, lightly bitter finish. Medium bodied. Nice Stout. Not overwhelming, but good by it’s simplicity. NoiZe (1372), Mooi Zeist, Netherlands

| 2.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 2/5 | 6/10 | 2/5 | 10/20 | Oct 10, 2007 Had this beer on 9/27/2004. Aroma is a rich sweet toasted scent. Color is a dead on solid black. Carbonation seems a bit low with almost no head. Taste rich and heavy. Starting with a rich full body it goes down with a sweet sharp feel. Finish comes on sweet with a rich malt flavor that is not as roasted as you would think or as it should be. Its a bit to sweet for a stout, seems more like a Porter to me and could use a bit more carbonation to brighten up the flavor. Would be a nice cold winter day beer.
