Commercial Description:
Great Lakes Brewing Company (GLBC) will celebrate its 15th anniversary on September 6, 2003. In recognition of this anniversary, GLBC will release a specialty brew called Anniversary Ale that will be available throughout September in a new 4-pack package at local grocers and on tap at taverns, including GLBC's brewpub. Anniversary Ale is a Belgian Trippel ale that is pale golden in color with mild fruity and spicy characteristics and a slightly sweet flavor that lends itself to a strong, crisp finish. The specialty craft brew is the strongest beer to be bottled and packaged by GLBC with an alcohol by volume of 9.5%.

Sweet, yeasty, and boozy nose. Apple flavors coupled with bananna, cloves, sugar and buttery smoothness. Quite good, but too strong in flavor and sweetness. Just a bit over the top for my tastes.

Thanks to BrooklynBoy for this.....my official cherry-popping experience for Great Lakes brews. I can’t believe such good beers come out of Cleveland? The only good things to ever come out of Cleveland are Bill Cowher and the Cleveland Steamer. This one pours turbid dark gold with a big creamy white head. Aroma of malt, hops, fruit, citrus, florals, and spice. Tastes malty, with big fruit, citrus, and hops. Palate is medium, with a smooth finish. This one is 1 part Hefe, 2 parts tripel, and 2 parts Belgian strong ale. Very nice.

Bottled...probably one of the worst beers I have ever had. After reading other reviews i feel as though maybe I had a bad/mishandled offering =( Poured a nice orange color and a nice white head. Aroma however was that of Hot Dogs and Pumpkin Pie. Much to my suprise my, nose did not lie, flavor matched my initial sense preception as my tatste buds were introduced to the Flavors mentionaed above. (nothing against either of the two taste sensations, but not in my beer) I have another in the cooler maybe one day when I build enough courage I will attempt again.

They may call it an "Abbey Tripel" but to me this is a Belgian Ale, and it had all of the appleness that I’ve come to expect from Belgians, but this beer had a lot of other characteristics that I cannot even begin to describe. It was one of the most complex beers I’ve ever had. Yummy.

I’ve been saving this one in the cellar for a few months since picking it up in Lakewood, OH. I was disappointed by this Great Lakes offering. Beer poured falt into the Chimay glass with a golden color and a few yeast floaties. Fruity fragrance, with a tart flavor that did not mask the alcohol well. One dimensional tripel that Great lakes attempted to match the flavors of its Belgian cousins. Nice try, next time I’ll stick with Great Lakes dark beers. Great Lakes makes an excellent porter and imperial stout, just not a tripel.

Draft - very pretty beer. Deep yellow-orange color with a tightly bubbled white head. Spicy, fruity aroma. I found the flavor to be pretty one dimensional. I got some fruitiness and that was about it. Not bad, but I’m not knocked out by this one.

Bright amber color with a light foamy white head that doesn’t last very long. The nose is strong with yeast and some spices that are quite hard to define (so I won’t try). Fruity with a hint of apple and a sweetness that lends to malt. The body is smooth and the alcohol is discernible immediately when it hits the tongue. Next comes a sweetness that is fruity at first and then malty. The finish is yeasty and strong with the alcohol not being over the top, but just strong enough to let you know that you need to take er ease. A bit yeasty and sweet for my liking, but what else is new for a North American triple.
