Not too bad, but it could have had some more malt characteristics to round it out. Good floral nose though. Smelled nice, but a bit too strong without much to balance it. | 2.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 5/10 | 4/5 | 10/20 | Dec 30, 2007 The first time I had this beer, it was my first IPA, and I couldn’t handle the hops at all. Tonight I had it with a chicken and biscuits meal. It suits the food well, and has some great floral aromas. However, none of the fruity overtones or other complexities showed up. It had a good mouthfeel for the style, but then it was just a dry, shallow bitter that didn’t really have a lot of flavor or pleasant notes. It was just a slightly acidic, but not fruity tartness and bitterness. I will try it again because I definitely remembered more complexity the first time, but as for now, this just wasn’t a good beer. Crafty07 (393), Florence, Kentucky, USA
| 2.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 2/10 | 2/5 | 8/20 | Dec 28, 2007 I’ve read about the Commodore but I don’t know if his personality matched this phenomenally bitter and unpleasant ale. If not, they have done his name a disservice.
I’m shocked the hop heads on this site haven’t lavished a 100 percentile rating on this overly hopped concoction.
The truth is, while the color and aroma are appealing, it’s just overdone.
You ever tasted chili whose maker has fired it with such overpowering pepper that you can’t taste anything else? If so, drink it with this IPA. JohnnyZ (81), USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Dec 26, 2007 Hoppy, hearty, and full of alcohol. Bottle drinker. I am sure it is way better properly poured. Delicious tastes of fruity American hops. Quality brew. I experienced a smooth mouth feel and aftertaste. Pleasant. lampeno420 (321), Zeeland, Michigan, USA
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Dec 12, 2007 Decently hoppy overall, but didn’t get a lot of aroma in the scent. It might be an old bottle. A little higher alcohol than most IPA’s, but barely detectable through the hops.
Easily could grab a 6 of these. jsquire (2113), St. Marys, Ohio, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Dec 11, 2007 Deep golden beer with a frothy off white head. Fresh floral hoppy nose with green apple and grapefruit rind. Full mouthfeel, almost syrupy. Cannied orange peel, pine resin, caramel squares. This is a hot IPA, which tingles on the tongue and leaves a thick, sweet hop resin in the finish. tytoanderso (1387), St. Louis Park, Minnesota, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Dec 10, 2007 12oz bottle from my Secret Santa. Muddled fruit cocktail aroma. Pears, peaches and apricots. A decent earthy component (grass and leaves as well. Pours bright honey colored with a thin white head. Nice amount of tongue grabbing bitterness on the palate. Some pine resin and dry wood but lots of bitter citrus. Crisp and lively on the tongue. Vibrant hops. The bitter hops leave a lasting impression. crazyvin (1254), New York, USA
