Commercial Description:
This smooth lager strikes a delicate balance between malt and hops in the aroma, palate, finish and body. It has more body and less hops than a Pilsner, and less malt and more hops than a Munich style lager. 30 IBU.

Bottle: Orange colored body with thin white head. Aroma has pine and purfume qualities. Very attractive, but not very complex. Carmel malts start this beer, and grow stronger as the beer warms. Alcohol shows itself in fruity sweetness along with piny, sweet hops in the finish. Great, full body, like how I always read a dortmunder should have. The finish lingered for quite a while, with some citrus notes added on to the already present alcohol and hop flavors.

Appearance was Clear Gold, poured with thick White Head. Pleasing Aroma of honey and Hops with a Crisp green apple Sweetness taste, Tingly on the tongue. Refreshing. Smooth and refreshing. Easy drinker. First experience with Great Lakes and I have to say it was a good one.

Bottle. Pours a clear amber color with a medium sized off white head. Aroma is malt, yeast, some floral hops. Flavor is sweet malt, some fruity undertones, hops. Palate is medium, medium carbonation, dry, bitter finish. Nice example of the style. A crowd pleaser.

I had a couple of these while I was visiting my parents over the Christmas holiday (12/24-25/2006). Unfortunately, I was under the weather for most of my stay, so I didn’t really get to have much beer other than a bottle of two of this and a couple bottles of Leinenkugel’s Red... Great Lakes Dortmunder Gold is clear and golden copper in color. The carbonation is lively which produces a large white head with good retention and some lacing. The aroma is grassy and floral with some underlying yeasty maltiness. The flavor is much like the aroma with a pronounced yet well balanced, fresh hop bitterness. The finish is a hair dry and resfreshingly crisp. Even though this brew is well carbonated, it is not overdone or fizzy. It has a slightly less than medium body. Overall this is a nicely done Dortmunder and is quite memorable. Kudos to Great Lakes Brewing! I really like this beer and wish that I could of enjoyed more (I would have had I not been so sick)... 12 oz bottle.

Bought this to bring to the brother in laws for a B-day party. Poured a light copper with a mild head. Not sure what it was about this but I plain just put this half a step above most macros. It was harsh, grainy and semi offensive. My Bro -in Law the MGD guy liked it. That says it all.

Bottle: Copper color with a white head. Aroma, some bready malts, and some grassy hops. Flavor, some yeast, some malts, a nice bit of bitterness. Very refreshing beer. Definitely one of my favorite lagers.

It seems that a brewers’ "flagship beer" is usually a bit of a crowd pleaser and as a consequence a bit boring compared to its other beers (Unibroue’s Blanche de Chambly comes to mind as I say this), but this is definitely an exception. This is a great craft lager. Color is a light copper color with wonderful head that laces better than any other lager I’ve ever had. Aroma is malty and biscuity, but exceptionally well-balanced with a notable (but in accordance with the style) hop presence. Taste is refreshing and mild. Mouthfeel is crisp and refreshing, making this beer highly sessionable.
