This is an excellent example of a porter and I highly recommend it. It seems to hold up well on draft or in the bottle, since it doesn’t have a big hop profile that will fade out over time. jspruit (113), Dublin, Ireland
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jun 1, 2007 This has been a favorite of mine for quite some time but I have neglected to rate it for some reason. Drank from a bottle pucrhased as a six-pack at International Beverage in Kentwood.
Pours a dark brown with a nice large foamy head. Smells of chocolate and coffee and makes my mouth water. Taste is similar to the smell but fuller with lots of malt and some hops presence. Although it is strong and a bold beer, the finish is smooth and I could drink a couple of these in a session.
Probably my favorite porter-even though I may be biased based on its brewery location. ig0r (6), USA does not count | 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | May 30, 2007 Pours dark brown with a perfect three-finger head. Tantalizing aroma of chocolate and a touch of citrus. Best aroma from any porter I’ve tried. Fair amount of flavor, with a medium-to-light body and carbonation. My favorite porter to date. arjoseph (594), Chicago, Illinois, USA

Never got around to rating this staple of the midwest beer scene. Pillowy cookie dough head over a ruby tinged black beer. At first sip, you know that this is a porter closer to the Baltic side of the spectrum than the English. Feels like a cold slab of fizzy chocolatey flavor that saves most of its punch for the finish, which is very dry chocolate, wet coffee bitter that is crisp (not a warm immersive bitterness, but rather an aloof standoffish bitter). The finish eventually fades into lactic sweetness. Roasty aromas with some toasted malts. Very well defined, a pleasure to drink. after4ever (2809), Brier, Washington, USA

Very scant head of off-white film; what there is isn’t there long. Roasty, ashy nose. Bold attack with plenty of flavor; medium body and carb. The mid-palate has nice densely packed flavors of chocolate and roast. Exceedingly mild finish. Awesome, rock-solid session beer, though it packs a bit more wallop than the perfect session beer might. A small quibble, though, since it’s well-hidden, and it’s up to me not to drink too many of these if I get going on ’em. :-) cking (1041), North Canton, Ohio, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | May 20, 2007 Rated 5/20/06: Fantastic porter, robust and full absolutely awesome. Pours a thick sticky black with a creamy tan head that lasts. The aroma is filled with dark malts and just a touch of floral hops, it is rather mild especially compared to the flavor. Once you dig into this robust porter the flavor immediately grabs you. Malts o’ plenty round out the dominant flavor consisting of coffee, chocolate, and plenty of roasted malts. The floral hops become slightly more hidden beneath the intense flavor. Mouthfeel is filling and creamy. One of my favorite local brews that satisfies on tap as well as poured into a glass straight from the bottle. In my opinion this is one of Great Lakes Brewing Co’s masterpieces.
