agillespie81 (190), Denver, Colorado, USA Jun 29, 2008 Amber color......thick, fluffy head. Faint malt aroma. Sweet malt flavor in the front......slightly crisp mouthfeel. Malty richness develops in the back, with a finish that has a slight bitterness. Maddog (231), Kettering, Ohio, USA Jun 22, 2008 Amber, red, Vienna? Whatever the style, this lager bores me. Maybe it is just the style that bores me because Eliot Ness is the top rated beer in its class. Dark amber in color without much of an aroma, this beer is full of caramel malts and light hops. But overall, this beer is pretty nondescript and not much in the way of unique or special flavors. marchcow (664), Coralville, Iowa, USA Jun 20, 2008 Tomato and fruity aroma. Reddish amber color with a miminimal head. Flavor is lightly bitter with a sweet caramelized sugar balance. Palate is medium creamy with a zippy carbonation. Very good Vienna. unclemike (834), Ft. Riley, Kansas, USA Jun 19, 2008 Oh my god im in heaven Bottle. Pours a dark amber color with a decent beige head. The aroma is caramel and toffee with some citrus and floral hops. The flavor is similar with the malts being ever so slightly more present than the hops. Overall this is pretty well balanced. Medium bodied with good carbonation. Glouglouburp (2778), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Jun 9, 2008 In short: A fruity and slightly sweet dark larger. Good beer but a bit overrated
How: Bottle 12oz, from Beerman6686. Thanks a lot Dan!
The look: Clear amber body with a short-lived beige head
In long: Candy-like crisp toffee sweetness. Quite a bit of dried fruits of all kinds, like taking mouthful of one of those grocery store mix-bag dried fruits. I personally found the floral hopping insufficient. This is a good beer and undoubtedly one of the best American dark lager I’ve had. But I pub-crawled the land of dark lagers (Czech Republic) and this Eliot Ness doesn’t measure up to the good Czech Viennas, it barely measures up to the average Czech Viennas. I basically found the quality reputation of this Eliot Ness as exaggerated as the real accomplishments of the man by the same name.
502Flavors (617), Louisville, Kentucky, USA Jun 3, 2008 12 oz bottle. Here’s my simple analysis: this is one of the better lagers out there IMO, and I don’t particularly like lagers. It reminded me of SA Boston Lager, but fresher, less hops, and just a bit better. If you like lagers you will probably like this. hellbilly (1492), scottsdale über alles, Arizona, USA Jun 2, 2008 bottle by way StFun. dark reddish copper color with a thin off white head. straight forward aromas of toffee, brown sugar, earthy hops and grain. same with the flavors... caramel grain, grass and earthy prickly hops with a touch of tartness. bright and crisp dry finish cleans the palate nicely. medium body with prickly carbonation. perfectly balanced easy drinker for the summer months... makes me wonder why beers like this are not made in AZ... phishpond417 (1861), Madison, Wisconsin, USA May 29, 2008 This beer was mighty tastey! It was rich in an reddish coloured pour. Soft fluffy medium sized head with malty taste. Caramel flavor was prevalent, and it was a really filling brew.
