Commercial Description:
Deep Amber red color, with a fragrant malt aroma. Flavorful notes of rich caramelized malt and noble hop flavors harmonize on the palate leading to a crisp clean finish. Named after one of Cleveland's most respected safety directors, who frequented the brewpub's bar during his tenure from 1935-1941 and, according to popular legend, was responsible for the bullet holes still evident today.

Thanks polomagnifico. Pours a very nice pretty auburn with a billowing creamy tan head. Smells like autumn, leaves, sweet malt, caramel, pumpkin, sweet spice. The flavor is nice and malty, sweet malts, light grassy hops, pumpkin meat, easy to drink. The palate is a little strange, absolutely zero carbonation in my sample despite the profuse head.

Big caramel nose from this deep red beer. The first word from my tasting notes says, "chewy". Teenie-tiny hops presence (35IBU). Pretty good with the sausage plate appetizer!!!

Dark reddish brown appearance. Distinctively malty, fruity caramel and toffee aroma. Sweet malts, caramel flavor, nice creaminess and well rounded feel. One of the best Vienna's I've tasted. I'll drink to Elliott Ness on this one.

12oz bottle, please enjoy by JUN 07/06. Pours a clear brownish amber with a small eggshell head. Aromas of spicy hops, caramel and toffee malts. Some nuttiness up front followed by the same sweet caramel and toffee into a mildly bitter finish. Some biscuity malts toward the end as well. Mildly carbonated, soft on the palate with a medium body. Good, but not fantastic.

Re-Rated from draft at GLBC in Cleveland: Sweet amber color, kind of lemony, but not unpleasantly so. Very Mellow malts, just a touch of caramel. Hops are equally mellow, with just a little bitterness and graininess. A slight flourish of poerter malts toward the end.
Original rating: 9/16/03, Score: 4.1 Draft. Did not even realize this was a lager beer, thought it was more of a brown ale (that’s a compliment). A nice creamy head, almost stoutlike. Had a good beery smell with a touch of fruitiness that led me to think this was an ale. A complex hop taste that I thought had more American hops that the normal German ones. A delightful brew that stands out at any autumn party.

Deep Red. Moderately aromatic with notes of toasted and caramel malts, slight spice and apples. Solidly crafted, nice malt body, apples and caramel with toasted malt and berries. Another well crafted brew from Great Lakes. It wasn’t quite what I was expecting but very good nonetheless.
