Commercial Description:
Deep Amber red color, with a fragrant malt aroma. Flavorful notes of rich caramelized malt and noble hop flavors harmonize on the palate leading to a crisp clean finish. Named after one of Cleveland's most respected safety directors, who frequented the brewpub's bar during his tenure from 1935-1941 and, according to popular legend, was responsible for the bullet holes still evident today.

(Best by Sep/20/04) I really like the color of this beer, sort of chestnut red. The nose is full of Hallertau and light sweet malts. The head only lasted for a little while, but there still is a small ring holding onto the rim of the glass. Malt and spicy hops meld effortlessly to produce a tasty brew. I taste bitter chocolate and smooth coffee and cream. This beer is nice and malty, but it is not overly sweet. Actually, the beer finishes dry and hoppy. A good interpretation of the style.

Bottle. Pours a dark amber color with a fairly large light tan head. Aroma is sweet fruit, malt, caramel. Flavor is dried fruit, malt, caramel, some floral hops. Palate is medium light, medium carbonation, clean finish. Another great beer. Crowd pleaser.

This has always been one of my favorites. This beer pours a reddish dark amber with an aroma of hops. The body is full and the finish is long. Too bad I was driving or, I’d have had a second.

My 600th rating... weee! Anyways big thanks to Degarth for sending this to me in my SecretSanta box. Great reddish-mahogony colored body along with a nice creamy white head. Nice wood chip and malty aroma. Wood chip, hoppy with malt taste, nice light fruit accents. Sweet with a light spice ending.

I had a bottle of this tonight after work. This brew pours a hazy medium orangish red hue. The brew is not pasteurized and has tiny particles of thin density. The mostly lasting head is huge, off white and creamy and has excellent lacing. The aroma is well balanced: a bit spicy with moderate hints of roasted grains and nuts, also having a moderate resinous piney hoppy texture, and light yeasty tones. To be quite honest, I was better able to analyze more of the hoppy qualities from my burps than from the nose. The beer’s initial flavor is moderately sweet and slightly bitter, transcending to a finish that is lightly sweet with a moderate sharp roasted bitterness that is slightly nutty. I enjoyed the medium body and dry texture. The carbonation was a bit lively for my liking, and the finish has a moderate amount of clean astringency. Overall a very decent brew.

Bottle. Pours a transparent rusty red with a short light tan head. Aroma of light earthy, grassy/citrus hops, toasted malt, caramel, light booze soaked fruits. Flavors of caramel, candied fruit, earthy hops, bready toasted malt and even a tinge of light smoke. Medium body, sturdy carbonation...malty/sweet/slightly dry with a earthy/bittersweet/malty finish. Overall pretty well balanced all around...a great session brew for spring/fall.
