Aroma was apples and bananas, with a hint of grapes. Initial flavor was the fruits, some hops and malt. At mid-glass, taste became more malty, and alcohol, though only 6.2 ABV, was more noticeable. A good smooth warming finish. I had heard there were freshness and dating questions with these Great Lakes Brews, but I’ve had no complaints so far with this or Dortmunder. buckybeer (666), Eau Claire, Wisconsin, USA

Beautiful color. Light malts and hops. Has a nice clean crisp taste. It is not the best beer in the world but whenever I see some I buy it. A great on to have on hand at all times. rbellas (4), USA does not count | 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jun 10, 2006 I hesitate to call it a well crafted amber lager but I feel it deserves to be. Pours a wonderful deep red with a dissapointing head. The flavors are rich full of sweet malts. These wonderful flavors need to stand out more and give me a good kick. valpoaj (362), Valparaiso, Indiana, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Feb 1, 2008 If a pour can be described as ’pretty’, this is that pour: garnet red with a very thick white head that diminishes pretty quick and leaves very nice lacing. Light wheat and caramel malt aroma. Flavor is more intense than the aroma with a bready flavor up front that quickly translates into a hoppy mixture with pretty strong bitterness. The finish has a great residual sweetness from the caramel malt flavors, one of the better finishes I’ve had in some time! Light, yet smooth on the palate with some slight oiliness. I’ve had a few other offerings by GL in the past, but this is the first one I’ve rated, and I don’t think I can remember one better than the Ness! BeerVirgin72 (778), Pataskala, Ohio, USA

Taste is almost pure sweet malt, maybe a hint of toffee or caramel. Very drinkable! Ambrose (141), East Aurora, New York, USA

Pours a clear, dark copper with a finger of creamy, beige head. The nose is a fairly straightforward blend of bready malt and lightly spicy/earthy hops. Medium-bodied and slick with creamy carbonation and a toasty, bitter finish. Toasted caramel malt with a solid noble-hopped backing; nicely balanced. Even past its "best by" date, this beer is well deserving of its status as the highest rated Vienna on this site. The next time I get the opportunity to buy more of this, I won’t hesitate to do so. Thanks again for this bottle, Matt! rowefam3 (70), kendallville, Indiana, USA
