Commercial Description:
Deep Amber red color, with a fragrant malt aroma. Flavorful notes of rich caramelized malt and noble hop flavors harmonize on the palate leading to a crisp clean finish. Named after one of Cleveland's most respected safety directors, who frequented the brewpub's bar during his tenure from 1935-1941 and, according to popular legend, was responsible for the bullet holes still evident today.

On 4/3/01 I considered this as not ’my mug of beer but it did get better as I drank more.’ I’ve had it a few times since. It is a nice hoppy beer. Flavorful. Not as hoppy as the Burning River or Nosferatu, but a nice beer.

Bottle@Home. Fruity, herbal aroma with a hint of rust. Amber color, beige head, good lace. Very sweet, malty, light bitter, fruity, hint of cookies. Quite full, almost syrupy. Well balanced.

Bottle (BB 03/11/09). Head is initially small, frothy, off-white, mostly diminishing. Body is clear medium to dark amber. Aroma is moderately malty (caramel, cookie, toasted light bread), lightly to moderately hoppy (flowers, apricot), with notes of peach and honey. Flavor is moderately to heavily sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly acidic, moderately bitter. Medium body, velvety texture, lively carbonation. Uncomfortably sweet, but otherwise very nice. Lovely to sniff, but kind of difficult to drink much of it.

Clear amber with a substantial soft light tan head. Light toffee and toast aroma, with undertones of light fruit and floral hops. Malty, buttery toast with a touch of orange marmalade. Sample seems a bit dated, but malt still comes through, will revisit when a fresher sample presents itself.

On tap at the brewery. Clear pale amber pour with a thin light brown head. Good aroma and flavor of biscuity malt and caramel, the malt is round and flavorfull. The body is medium with an oily texture and soft carbonation. A very solid vienna.

12 oz bottle: Three words to describe Great Lakes Brewing "Consistently good beers" not all of them knock it out of the park, but a lot of them are damn good. Pours a clear amber color with a small sized carbonated tan head that lingers. Aroma is caramel, roasty notes, almost a grainy fresh sweet corn note (not the corn note for Bud and other) candy, and sweet. Taste is really nice rich caramel notes, nice lightly burnt notes, malt characteristic is very present. Palate is nicely carbonated, somewhat sweet on the lips, and tongue coating. Overall, This is darn good Vienna, Nice stuff.

Pours a deep brownish amber with a thick off-white head that fades down to swils of foam. Nose is sweet and malty. Flavor is a bit thick for a lager, but it’s still a lager. Rich and malty with some hop bitterness in the end. Nice and smooth. A beer junkies lager for sure.

Rich, amber body with an off-white head. Fairly good lacing, too. Malt and hop both present in the aroma, but the malt plays a larger role. The flavor is quite malty at first, but the hops appear in the middle to balance things out. Average carbonation, and it has an overall smooth mouthfeel. This is a good Vienna, but not the best I’ve had.
