BrotherGrendel (551), San Diego (La Jolla), California, USA Nov 9, 2009 Cask at Obriens. Amber hue with thin ring of white head. Nose is big malts and huge citrus and resin hops. Flavor is hop juice full of citrus, tea leaves, and resin, bready malts fill in the spaces with a touch of alcohol heat. Medium-full body, thick texture, no carb. A casky DIPA with heavy hop presence, but fairly smooth and balanced, prefer this one on draft! ajm (902), Los Angeles, California, USA Oct 29, 2009 Tap at Blue Palms for LA Beer Week. Big nose full of tart, piney and orangepeel hops. Golden orange color. Flavor is like an ASA - pretty hot, pretty marmaladey, quite dry. Notes of Arrogant Bastard maltiness. Malts are actually quite full but get overpowered. beersearcher (203), Glendale, California, USA Oct 21, 2009 1/2 barleywine and 1/2 intense IPA. it lives up to the name. nice dark orange color. aroma is really nice but the bitter flavor was a bit too much for me. iowaherkeye (1832), Bakersfield, California, USA Oct 15, 2009 Listed @ 10.0% @ Hamilton’s, labeled 2nd Anniversary Palate Wrecker. Clear medium orange with a one finger off-white head, fading to a thick ring and tattered film before long. Loads of citrus in the aroma. There is some faint pine and pineapple as well as some sweet caramel malts. Flavor is a little too sweet caramel malt-forward with what I figure is some light diacetyl. There are still plenty of hops, but too much of a malt backbone to keep my hoppy side happy. Bitterness peaked @ a 6 in the semi-dry finish. Moderate prickly carbonation with a full body. A decent DIPA. HonkeyBra (1270), Lemont, Illinois, USA Oct 11, 2009 Sampled at GABF. Palate wrecker? Big talk, let see if the beer backs it up. Aroma is hoppy, piney, lots of grapefruit. Pretty strong hoppy flavor. Sweet, alcoholic, and citrus hops. KInd of a sticky mouthfeel. Better than their normal DIPA. Then again, I’m not sure my palate is wrecked. daleharshman (181), San Diego, California, USA Oct 8, 2009 Draft at Toronado SD. Pours a dark amber with off-white head. Strong sticky hop aroma of resin, grass, pine, and bitter grapefruit. Taste is -- not surprisingly -- more strong hop flavors: big bitter grapefruit, sticky pine/resin, and spicy hops. Quite bitter but somehow still well-balanced with some semi-sweet malt tones. Nice lingering bitterness in the finish. The high ABV is not noticeable. Aubrey (2773), Denver, Colorado, USA Oct 3, 2009 GABF 2009: Monster hops. Monster alcohol, too, with an interesting, malt liquor-like quality. Sweet malt base. Grassy and flowery hop aromas. Bitterly beautiful.
nickd717 (1276), Palo Alto, California, USA Sep 28, 2009 Had this on tap at GABF ’09. Slightly hazy orangish-copper color with a medium white head. Aroma is floral and citrusy hops, sweet malt, and some fruity esters. Flavor is mildly sweet pale and caramel malt along with citrusy and resiny hops, pineapple and grapefruit. Hop character not unlike other GF IPAs. This is good but there are much more palate-wrecking beers out there. Body is medium with some hoppy oiliness and lingering bitterness on the palate.
