Commercial Description:
Bottle: Pasteurised.
Marketed in the United States as Olde Suffolk.
A blend of two ales: Old 5X , which is brewed to the maximum strength possible (around 12% abv) and left to mature in 100-barrel oak vats for a minimum of two years, and BPA, a dark, full-bodied freshly brewed beer which is added just before bottling. The result is a unique beer - strong (6% abv), dark, fruity, oaky and very, very special.

0.5 l bottle. Dark reddish brown color with tan head. Sweet, sour, meaty and woody flavor with notes of licorice, toffee, honey and raisins. Sweet, sour and vinous flavor with toffee, pepper, raspberry, mint and mild acidity. Long woody, vinous and berryish finish. Appropriate light carbonation. Complex and unique beer!

500ml Bottle: Dark brown pour with ruby red edges, initially great off-white head with excellent retention, but it disappeared fast. Aroma of oak, cherries, plums, alcohol, anise, oranges, and malt. The alcohol is very prevalent, seems much higher than the advertised 6%. Sweetness off the start from fruits and malts, noticeable woody, oaken qualities taken from the aging. Some hops in the back but not a lot, it’s more a hint. Medium body and mouthfeel. Good.

Mahogany pour with nearly no head. Earthy, malty, oak aroma that is very sweet. Velvety mouthfeel. Smooth taste of caramel malt and some vanilla mellowness from the oak. Slight bitterness in the back. Nicely balanced.

Dark mahogany. Weak aroma dominated by english toffee and burnt caramel. Quite full body with lots of caramel sweetness combined with the burnt malts.

Dark burgandy with minimal head. Pleasant malty aroma with matching flavor. I found the mouthfeel to be a bit fizzy and bitter. A bit too much for my taste. I don’t think I’ll revisit this one.

Deep amber with little off white head. Aroma of malts. Caramel, oak & dark fruits. Filling body with a medium pleasant carbonation. Great sweetness that is pleasant. Fine and well balanced! Positively surprised! Great ale!
