Commercial Description:
Bottle: Pasteurised.
Marketed in the United States as Olde Suffolk.
A blend of two ales: Old 5X , which is brewed to the maximum strength possible (around 12% abv) and left to mature in 100-barrel oak vats for a minimum of two years, and BPA, a dark, full-bodied freshly brewed beer which is added just before bottling. The result is a unique beer - strong (6% abv), dark, fruity, oaky and very, very special.

Tasted in Toronto. Obtained from LCBO as part of the winter series. Tasted in dimple mug. Pours dark ruby/black, little or no head. Aroma has some pungency, sweet, candy like and malty. Flavor is dominantly sweet, candy floss, licorice with a roasty caramel finish.

Nce, a bit less rich than other warmers appearing this season, and a touch sour from the aged-beer component. I liked it. Amazing burgundy-reddish hue. The woody notes were not really pronounced for me.

LCBO advanced tasting- This pours a faintly carbonated copper liquid, with just a petit amount of beige dusting. Nice malt based aroma(toasty, roasted malts, bready) with woody, nutty, burnt sugars. Flavours are a wonderfully balanced interpretation of the aromas. Lots of vanilla/wood, with sweet nutty malts, toasty, with a smidge of the ABV shining through. Very warming, and dangerously drinkable. Finishes with a big malt bang, and a wonderful warmth.

Bottle. Purchased at The La Jolla, CA Bev Mo. The brew pours a blackish amber, though it seemed lighter when it came out of the bottle and settled to be much darker then expected. the head is light tan and has settled some but seems stable enough. The scent I could smell from a distance, up close it smells nicely malty and robust. The intial taste is hard to place its both strong and subtle and drinkable. There are strong notes of malt in this brew and a light slighty fruity aftertaste. This ale is certainly delicious and different from others I’ve had. Well worth a try, has a slightly wine like quality with further drinking.

how does this beer have such good marks, its truly terrible but it just shows you how different some people can think... and brew. It first tastes bitter sweet then starts to sharpen as it warms,....its aftertaste tastes like wine when you breath out the nose, but alot of people like that bite to there brew...but not me really. i did a rerate twice!, this beer is ...well, crap, i hate it , to fuckin tart and sour and ...geez, tastes like a beer that went bad!!! a wine beer if u will

This is beer 400 for me and I picked it up at a UK supermarket. On first sip it seemed pretty busy with a lot of different elements spinning through my tongue (my first impression was wow this is burnt) and after awhile I began to appreciate the oaky biscuit-like malt flavor which has a finish that seems rather elegant. Its almost crunchy despite the dry finish. I’d say there are some dark cherry oak notes in here and in the sweet aroma. (2004 vintage). Sometimes Waitrose does not disappoint. If this wasn’t pasteurised and was more natural, I’d rate it higher.

In the brewery tap, Bury. Bottle conditioned. Big treacle flavour. Full bodied and slightly sweet with some woody notes. Strong. Enjoyable.
