Commercial Description:
Bottle: Pasteurised.
Marketed in the United States as Olde Suffolk.
A blend of two ales: Old 5X , which is brewed to the maximum strength possible (around 12% abv) and left to mature in 100-barrel oak vats for a minimum of two years, and BPA, a dark, full-bodied freshly brewed beer which is added just before bottling. The result is a unique beer - strong (6% abv), dark, fruity, oaky and very, very special.

50cl bottle, Wellington, New Zealand. Dark brown color. Sweet malty aroma. Mellow oaky flavor, not over powering nor too sweet. Good bottled ale.

Tasted 25/05/2006. 500ml bottle from New World Metro, Wellington. Pours mohogany brown, with a thin tan head that disappears quickly. Slightly vinous look, including some oily legs. Looks quite still. Nice mild nose - a blend of caramel, toasty malt, sour fruit and woody, resinous, hop notes. Good malt sweetness up the front, without being cloying. Sour notes through the middle but well balanced with the sweet toffee-like malt. Long mild oaky bitterness invites another swallow. Virtually flat, with a slight tingle, and is medium to full weight. Toffee apple beer. Fruity, smooth and morish. Great stuff from the much maligned Greene King.

16.9oz bottle, no date. Pours a dark brown, almost black with a medium beige head. The aroma is quite faint, with molasses, brown sugar, raisins, and toasted malts coming through. Lowering the rating because I can barely smell this stuff. Flavor is the same with the addition of sour cherries, and to be honest, the flavor seems a bit muted here as well, though not as bad as the aroma.medium to full bodied, soft arbonation. Leaves a weird bitter aftertaste. An above average brew. Side note: this is one beer you need to let warm up quite a bit for any flavors and aromas to come out. I let this one warm up a bit and also was able to pick up on some oak in the flavor, but otherwise everything is the same, just more apparent.

[bottle from beers of europe] Aroma is sweet and malty, nutty, dark fruit nuances. medium bodied, faintly dry finish, was hoping for a bit more acidity here :/

Dispointed here. Aroma gives seriously toffee malts, some dark fruits also. Taste is similar sweetish. I get the vinus near balsalmic tones also. However whatever would posses the brewer not to make this bottle conditioned is behond me. So much potentional, however such an average beer.

Bottled. Deep mahogani color with a nice beige head. No carbonation. Sweet aroma with prunes and raisins, some vanilla, and a hint of alcohol in the background. It has a rich, sweet, fruity-bitter and caramelized flavor, that finishes of lightly dry and bitter. Medium, sweet body. Unfortunately, the flavor don’t follow up the promising aroma. (060430)

This beer pours a deep amber with a small tan head. Aromas of fruits and florals. Very smooth and drinkable beer! Probably one of the best english ales, if not the best! Cheers
