Commercial Description:
Bottle: Pasteurised.
Marketed in the United States as Olde Suffolk.
A blend of two ales: Old 5X , which is brewed to the maximum strength possible (around 12% abv) and left to mature in 100-barrel oak vats for a minimum of two years, and BPA, a dark, full-bodied freshly brewed beer which is added just before bottling. The result is a unique beer - strong (6% abv), dark, fruity, oaky and very, very special.

Strong caramel, rasin, prun, and butterscotch... a little carbonation, nice head, no lace... all in all a nice smooth, easy drinking, old ale

Murky chestnut body with a modest, loose and short-lived beige head. Strong malty aroma of fresh wort, pleasant fruity English malt, notes of tobacco and black tea, and lots of earthy, organic tones. Flavor is of well-caramelized malt and tart plums. Has a nice full-flavored blend of light sweetness and notable tart and bitter qualities. Palate is lighter than anticipated given the ample flavor. A nice, complex but reasonably light drinking beer.

Bottle. Dark black color with an average frothy light brown head that lasted. Heavy roasted malt and toffee aroma. Medium to full body with a slick texture. Flavor is a heavy sweet with a light bitter finish of long duration. Very good brew.

Darkbrown reddish color, very short-lasting tanned head. Smells of red grapes/ red wine and oak. Tastes of thinned red wine, small hint of caramel and oak.. if it werent for the foam, i wouldnt call it beer... Very nice palate though, gentle and soft.

Clear dark, dark brown - almost black. In fact, it poured a bit like a cola. Sweet berry fruits in the aroma, along with licorice. On tasting I could detect some burnt toffee, with a whiskey feel coming through on the aftertaste, probably from the oak. There is some shallow bitterness, but it seems to be layered on top rather than integrated, and a sweetness that seems to contrast rather than complement. A medium body, and average carbonation. I was hoping for a little more from this, as it didn’t live up to the aroma and tasted a little artificial.

500ml bottle from Morrisons. Pleased to find this one lurking on the shelves. Reddish brown colour with a good depth of flavour and slightly sweet finish. Not really a beer to drink lots of but a nice treat.
