Commercial Description:
Bottle: Pasteurised.
Marketed in the United States as Olde Suffolk.
A blend of two ales: Old 5X , which is brewed to the maximum strength possible (around 12% abv) and left to mature in 100-barrel oak vats for a minimum of two years, and BPA, a dark, full-bodied freshly brewed beer which is added just before bottling. The result is a unique beer - strong (6% abv), dark, fruity, oaky and very, very special.

Beige weak head. Dark amber-mahogany color. Aroma is malty with dark fruits, caramel, nuts and roasty notes. Flavor is sweet with fruity (raisins) and light wooden tones, ending in a moderately dry bitter finish. Medium to full bodied.

Darkbrown reddish color, very short-lasting tanned head. Smells of red grapes/ red wine and oak. Tastes of thinned red wine, small hint of caramel and oak.. if it werent for the foam, i wouldnt call it beer... Very nice palate though, gentle and soft.

Clear dark, dark brown - almost black. In fact, it poured a bit like a cola. Sweet berry fruits in the aroma, along with licorice. On tasting I could detect some burnt toffee, with a whiskey feel coming through on the aftertaste, probably from the oak. There is some shallow bitterness, but it seems to be layered on top rather than integrated, and a sweetness that seems to contrast rather than complement. A medium body, and average carbonation. I was hoping for a little more from this, as it didn’t live up to the aroma and tasted a little artificial.

500ml bottle from Morrisons. Pleased to find this one lurking on the shelves. Reddish brown colour with a good depth of flavour and slightly sweet finish. Not really a beer to drink lots of but a nice treat.

Dark cherry-red brown, rich aromas of sour mash, oak, brown sugar and toffee. Scotchy and winey, sour cherries, walnuts, bitter chocolate and rich roasted malt. Fantastic, complex, and worth the money.

500ml bottle from Morrisons. Deep ruby in colour with thin beige head. Slightly sour with some liquorice. Some nice malt fruit, some brown sugar. Some sourness towards end and some hop. Not bad

(Bottle 50 cl) Vintage 1996. Very dark brown, almost black, with only the tiniest head. Very full-bodied with a vinous character and a vague metallic edge. Very characterful beer, lots of personality here. 290800
