Wulfstan (481), California, USA Oct 12, 2007 Updated: May 8, 2008 This is a deep, slightly brownish ruby red with a dense, big, light tan head that dissipates slowly to leave a thin lasting top and a little lacing. The aroma is strongly fruity with toasted bread, caramel, earthiness, hints of juniper, port, brandy, and chocolate. The taste is fruity with a light but definite gingerbread or pontefract cake flavour (a hint of licorice), definite bitterness up front & in the finish, with definite chocolate & wheat bread to fill it out. It has burnt sugar and light piney bitterness to complement the light sweetness. The palate is full and complex, and lively for the style. It is also drier than many f the style, with a more juniopery-juicy hop quality than some. All round, this is a satisfyingly tasty and full-bodied beer, easy to drink.
