ESBman (50), Andover, Bedfordshire, England Mar 5, 2006 The third beer tasted at the Piglet 2 Mini-Beerfestival, Leyton, London, 24/02/06. Served by a handpump.
Dark straw to golden colour, great clarity with a thin but tightly foamy head; low carbonation naturally~~
Chinook’s extra-fragrant and flowery hoppyness is well mixed with longan-flower honey aroma, with but a slightly tart and sweet hint in the background. Maltiness plays the second fiddle.
Juicy hops and flowery on the palate upfront, supported by a stream of very soft yet also chewy pale-malts; a settled barley-tea like aftertaste mingles with more crispness from the hops in the finish--delicious~~
A very smooth and hoppy bitter this is, though in the very end the texture thins out a bit. The barley tea-ish aftertaste is the key to make this bitter slightly more special than other traditional bitters or pale ales, and I suppose it’s partly the work of using Chinook hops in this brew. Very enjoyable on cask!!
SilkTork (3950), Rochester, Kent, England Mar 15, 2007 Brighton Beer Fest. Pale bitter with gentle earthy hops and a touch of aged, damp oak. Flowery notes to the hops, merging into perfumed at the finish. Some vanilla oak in the malt. A seductive golden bitter. Golden coloured and slightly hoppy. Smooth on the palate and slightly bitter with some malt and wheat flavours in the finish.
