Heathen (525), Riverside, New Jersey, USA Sep 30, 2008 THOUGHTS: It’s a nice beverage, but not the best beer. It was definitely Belgian smelling and tasting, but there wasn’t enough beer to it really. It was almost like an alcoholic soda. It also had that flavor and aroma that I am beginning to associate with sorghum beers, but not as strong as I’ve experienced before. All that said, if I could never drink regular beer again, this would be a nice replacement.
TECHNICAL: Bottle. Poured a nearly opaque, medium to dark brown with an average tan head that mostly diminished and left fair lacing. The aroma wasn’t entirely unpleasant, but it did get weaker and weaker as time went by. There was moderate to heavy caramel and milk chocolate; honey, brown sugar, cola, spices, candy dark fruit, that sorghum chemical smell, slight alcohol and light yeast. The initial flavor was moderate to heavily sweet and heavily acidic; while the finish was heavily to harshly sweet; and sour with a short duration. The flavor was nice, but way to cloying. There was brown sugar, candy sugar, caramel, a little cola, chocolate and yeast; and that chemical sorghum taste. The medium body was dry and really astringent with very fizzy carbonation and a dry and moderate to heavy astringent finish.
Indra (1873), Prairie Village, Kansas, USA Dec 1, 2008 500ml bottle. Aroma of dark fruits and spices, some mild cocoa and earthiness, combined with faint toffee, herbs, licorice and plum. Dark brownish red color, initial pour is clear although this is bottle conditioned, head is slight and subsiding. Flavor is gently sweet and estery, more plummy fruit, grape and dark sugars, somewhat tangy throughout, and seeing a mildly spicy bitterness towards the finish. Prickly and quite active on the palate, body is medium. I’m rating with the thought in mind that that this is brewed to a predominantly malty style, but doesn’t contain any malt. bu11zeye (3887), Frisco, Texas, USA Nov 20, 2008 (Bottle, courtesy of Swalden 28) Pours a dark brown body with a small beige head. Aroma of raisins, vinous, plum, caramel, port, and apple. Flavor of dark fruit, oxidization, and cheap wine. mar (754), Dallas, Texas, USA Oct 19, 2008 bottle thanks to swalden. deep brown pour with no head. big malty scent with spices and an overall thick fruity smell. the flavor is just like the scent and it’s a pretty decent brew. RichJ7 (903), Cullman, Alabama, USA Oct 16, 2008 Pours a dark, cloudy brown with a half-inch beige head. Aroma is vaguely medicinal, sorghum perhaps. Flavor is interesting and not entirely unpleasant ... at first. This is just weird, frankly. Tastes like it wants to be an abbey dubbel but isn’t. Like if aliens tried to recreate a dubbel using extraterrestrial fauna. Not very good. hopscotch (4679), Vero Beach, Florida, USA Oct 2, 2008 Bottle... Very dark brew (hazy orange when held up to light) with a small, fizzy, white head. Smells like sake and dark fruit. Light-bodied with extremely fizzy carbonation. Tastes like bad, cloyingly sweet sake. Finishes sweet and watery.
