FunkyBrewster (435), Chicago, Illinois, USA Nov 7, 2009 12 oz bottle. Pours a deep dark red with a creamy light tan froth. Aroma is very candied dark fruitiness. Some sweet nuts and other dark fruits, raisins and a bit of a sweetened red creme soda note. Flavor starts sweet and sugary. Some toffee and plum with other dark fruits. Stays very sweet and syrupy through the somewhat dry finish leaving almost no bitterness. Cloyingly sweet. Medium body and a soft carbonation. Love the style but this is not much of a representation. DYCSoccer17 (2187), Davis, California, USA Nov 7, 2009 12 ounce bottle from the Davis Food Co-Op. Musty, estery, sweet, vinous aroma with some hints of raisin. Mostly transparent mahogany body with a slight off-white head. Starts sweet and sugary, which becomes a little vinous. Finishes with an incredibly nutty flavor. Walnuts and almonds primarily. Pretty straight-forward and kind of boring. Meh. Allen (1282), Switzerland Nov 3, 2009 Bottled 33cl. Beautiful nut brown beer which leaves a nice lace. Sweet malty nutty aroma with hints of raisin accompanied by faint acetone, banana and mothballs. Extremely sweet malty taste with hints of mothballs and banana. Very low bitterness. Caramel and raisin showing up. Flat palate. Sweet metallic finish. Another Grimbergen beer I didn’t enjoy at all. CUJO (339), Brooklyn, New York, USA Nov 1, 2009 bottle: tulip: You have got to love this style! The pour is a dark cola, some red tints... thin head ring. The nose is sweet, lots of dark fruits through prunes and raisins... the taste is very malty and yeasty as expected, though not much each. Solid beer, but subpar in the style. White head. Malt aroma. Mid brown amber coloured strong in alcohol and a little sweet on the palate with a crisp dry and slightly chocolaty warming malt finish. emerica56 (575), Bristol, Rhode Island, USA Oct 29, 2009 Pours a cloudy dark nut brown with a thin head that is nut color. The nose is full of dark fruit and black current, with some hop aroma. As you sip on it you can really taste the toffee and black current. The flavor is very rich and full of fruit, and appealing to the palate and mouth. It has great carbonation and a good balance of flavor and texture. RHeastings (377), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA Oct 20, 2009 Enjoyed from an 11.2oz bottle in a hexagonal glass. The beer pours a medium to deep brown color that also shows some ruby highlights. A small off-white head evidences itself in the first several minutes. The nose shows characters of Belgian character malts, especially evidencing the malty/raisony/caramelly characters of CaraMunich and Special B. There is also a somewhat rough grainy character that comes in toward the back end. The palate begins nicely malty, showing the aforementioned characters again. This is followed up by some yeast esters that seem to given notes similar to Chimay’s strain. As with the nose, the grainy and almost insipid character comes in toward the finish, and ultimately keeps the beer from being much better than good. BMan1113VR (2752), Los Angeles (and Dallas), Texas, USA Oct 19, 2009 Bottle thanks to daknole. Pours with a reddish dark brown with a fluffy tan head. Aroma of caramel, red apples, books, toffee, chocolate, earth and alcohol (calvados like). Taste is sticky with some rotten fruits, and brandy with a bit of fudge on the finish. Creamy bubbles. Decent.
