Chocolate brown pour with a thick head. Strong lacing that clung to the glass. Aroma was very weak. I got some malty notes, a bit of fruit, but not much else. Somewhat disappointing. Flavor was much better - light roasted flavor with some sweet maltiness balanced in. Good brew, but I had higher expectations. TrefwoordPunk (556), Leiden, Netherlands
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 4/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Dec 9, 2007 Bottle 33 cl. Pours a dark amber with a small tannish head. Smell is mainly citrus, not heavily sweet like your average dubbel. Taste is sweet, lots of caramel, candy sugar, coffee (with milk and sugar) and banana. Finish is a bit plane and not that longlasting. I know better dubbels sheatripper (863), Brooklyn, New York, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Dec 7, 2007 33 cl. bottle. Poured hard into a chalice dark brown with a minimal head. Aroma of coffee malts, raisin, apple and spices. Sweet dark bready and toffee malt flavor with a mild spiciness in the back and an underlying fruitiness. Lively carbonation, though seems a bit too thin bodied. Not bad, but like the blonde, this seems like a streamlined recipe designed for mass global bottling and export, rather than an authentically complex abbey style Belgian. Style: Belgian Double
Label Info: 6.5% ABV. Rich, dark burgundy ale with a white head. Serve between 45-55* in a chalice glass.
Brewery: Alken-Maes; Jumet, Belgium
------- dark brown, coffee/strong tea color. Off-white head that dissipates quickly.
Nose has hints of malt, dates and dough (un-baked bread).
Molasses, malty with faint hints of spice in the background. Might have been some hints of toffee in there, but I didn’t notice the chocolate that they claim on the label. Has an almost Port-like, fortified wine type finish.
This is a bargain Belgian beer and it (to me) shows. Slightly watery, not as robust as I would like. Alldaydrinker (558), Norwood, Massachusetts, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Nov 29, 2007 Poured into a trappist with a dark ruby brown colour and small creamy tan head. Nose is muted with only some dark fruits & sugars. Initial taste of candy grape, sweet malts that are then blanketed by toffee. Palate of toffee, cocoa and mild bitterness.Good Lacing of the glass and some head retention. Medium body and perfect carbonation. timfoolery (484), California, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Nov 27, 2007 Poured dark red with rich, frothy head. Smelled of pure malt and sugars, almost like cake. Tasted like most Scottish ales, but with a refined taste and no aftertaste. One of my favorite of the genre. Excellent ale! jmm1 (109), Andorra
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Nov 25, 2007 On tap @ Bristol Blue Free House in Barcelona. Dark ruby clear body with a fluffy beige head. Spices, caramel and toffee nose. Sweet malts, clove and ripe grapes in mouth with a champagne-like sour finish (rather than brandy). Medium carbonation makes it a good beer for all ocasions. A good abbey dubbel.
