It does a little ring lacing. Aroma is slightly sour dark fruit over dark roasted caramel. Thinnish body with coarse carbonation. Flavor is caramel, treacle, raisin, alcohol. There’s fair heat here. Seems to have woody notes. This finishes towards dry, but without much bitter. Still, it is something for a cold evening. Alcohol is a bit too evident, but it drinks well, though advisedly slowly. tiggmtl (4311), Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
| 2.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 2/5 | 11/20 | Jul 10, 2007 Sweet juicy grapes and cherries with lots of brown sugar in the nose. Brilliantly clear brown body is topped by a low but long lasting off white head. Some minor lace as it recedes. Marzipan nuttiness and tired fruity esters in the flavour. Low bitterness but some strong jolts of alcohol. Light body that does little to support all that sweetness. Strong warming. Carbonation somewhat short-lived. Bottle sampled in Spring 2007 with Oakes. cgarvieuk (4196), Edinburgh, Scotland

| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Jan 11, 2009 Dark deep brown with retaining white head, a tad of the same lace. Malty yeasty aroma. A real foamer on opening. Above average mouthfeel. Mostly sweet malt taste, and yeast thickening it up. Drinkable, sweet though not cloying. | 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Nov 8, 2006 Bottle (330ml). Courtesy of Biegaman. In my Chimay goblet. Slightly hazy deep orange, average foamy-frothy lasting beige head. Sweet brown sugar malt aroma, very yeasty cinnamon and other sweet spice; alcohol. Taste - very much what the aroma promised, but boozier and fruity, with an increasing alcohol dominance as it warms - even a hint of tartness in the finish. Syrupy, solid body, very lively and alcoholic, sticky sweet linger - pretty solid belgian strong, very sweet, maybe a little too boozy, but I’m partial to the style, so decent marks. This bottled brew marked best before 3/05 poured an small head size of fine to medium sized mostly lasting light brown colored bubbles that left behind a good lacing. The body contained no carbonation, was semi-transparent and dark brown in color. Its aroma contained notes of dark malts and raisins. Its mouth feel is vinous with a vinous palate that fades in the finish. Its flavor was unnoted but was tasty. All-in-all very nice brew.
