Aroma’s pretty sweet right off the bat with lots of caramel malt, some diacetyl, spices and dark fruit. Mild flavour follows the aroma with the addition of some hops for a slightly astringent bitter finish. Medium bodied. Didn’t do much for me, I found it just O.K. sisyphus12 (98), Belmont, Massachusetts, USA

Surprsingly smooth and well balanced this is not a beer I would want several of but its really quite good DuffLover (48), Hoboken, New Jersey, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Dec 23, 2006 From 12 oz bottle. Nice malted, spicy aroma with some caramel and roasted malt detected. Transparent red color with white head that dissipates quickly. Flavor is candy, malt. Moderately carbonated, palate medium but a little syrupy and coating of the mouth. A good brew. I remember Gritty’s Halloween ale being a little better than this ESB. swoopjones (1920), Buffalo, New York, USA

| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Dec 5, 2006 Bottle (12oz). Best before October 2007. Clear, deep, refractive ruby-mahogany, average beige foamy head. Sweet roast malt aroma, plenty of funky, pungent hops and what seem to be strong undercurrents of fig, raisin and mince pie spices; develops a hint of tar as it warms. Taste - the roast seems stronger, lightly caramelized, with bitter, pungent fresh hops underpinning it all, an admixture of dried apples, currants and dates, as well as a slightly medicinal hint of blackstrap molases - the alcohol’s there but doesn’t insist. Pretty thick, syrupy body, very light carbonation but plenty of complexity on the tongue and in the reasonably long finish - an excellent winter beer, not as up-front boozy as most, wish I had more.
