Commercial Description:
Our Christmas Ale is a robust E.S.B. (Extra Special Bitter.) This brew has a lovely, dark red/amber color and a rich, full-bodied, malty taste with a slightly roasted undertone. We brew our Christmas Ale to an original gravity of 1064 (about 6.2% alcohol by volume) using only the finest English Pale and Crystal Malts with a touch of Roasted Barley as well. A blend of Clusters, Styrian Goldings, Saaz and Yakima Goldings leaf hops round out this hearty brew. Gritty's Christmas Ale has no additives, fruits or spices. It's just a good honest ale, perfect for the season. And to top it all off, it's already gift-wrapped! (Available on draft, in 22 oz bottles and 5 liter Mini-kegs from November through January)

12oz bottle. Bottle labeled best before N 08. Poured a deep ruby / orangish color with an averaged sized off white head. Aromas of toasted malts, caramel, some graininess, and toffee. Tastes of pretty much the same.

Pours a transparent copper amber with a spotty-lacing light tan head. Aroma of lightly toasted caramel malt and some piny English hops. Body starts with light caramel malty sweetness, a touch of light fruits and some earthy bittering hops before a slightly citrusy bittersweet finish. An ok ESB.

2005, best before Nov 2006 bottle consumed on 12/4/05. Pours a deep garnet-auburn-magenta with some dark tan-brown hues. Carbonation is fizzy and high, forming a moderate amount of beige head that is poorly retained and quickly dissipates to a ring, leaving little to no lacing. Aroma of sugar plums, dates, raisins, toasted malt and dry toffee, with a light amount of cherry-like fruits and a touch of vanilla-cream-like sugars. Some light floral hops add a touch of bitterness but are otherwise not very apparent in the nose. The flavor shows a touch of diacetyl, though it is quickly passing and turns in to a more creamy-sweet malt and then just a light caramel-raisin-date sugariness, with a touch of fruitiness lingering. Fair amount of bitterness on the finish, but almost no hop flavor. Bitterness seems almost medicinal at the end, or possibly just astringent. No alcohol apparency. Medium body, very sugary and simple overall, with little malt complexity. Texture is overcarbonated and watery on the end, very filtered and lifeless beer, slips over the mouth providing little substantial chewiness or fat malts. Just slick sugariness. Didnt finish it.
