Commercial Description:
Technically speaking, this ale can be described as an Extra Special Bitter. What that really means is that more of everything that goes into our bitter is added to the Halloween Ale -- more imported barley and more fresh Goldings hops from East Kent in England. This strong ale is also given some extra time in the conditioning tank, allowing it to mellow considerably.

Translucent dark copper body with finger-thick light tan head. Smells very malty with strong caramel and yeast notes. Tastes malty and spicy, with hints of burnt malts. An excellent beer and an old favorite for me. While it’s very good, I would love to try this on tap.

Draft @ Gritty’s. Apparently on Nitro "like a stout". Dark amber body, small creamy beige head and decent lacing. (nitro saves the day on that one I guess) Muted fruity malt in the aroma seems to a be a consistent theme throughout their brews. Flavour has mild malt and a whole lot of alcohol presence for only 6%. Average palate. Disappointing, hoping the bottle I bought will be better.

Bottle. Pours a dark amber with nice lacing. An almost port like flavoring on first taste. Fairly bitter, but nothing on the finish. Pleasant, but unremarkable.

On tap in Portland, ME. Pours a clear dark brown color with a small fizzy head. Nose is nutty and malty a bit, with some light spices floating around. Taste is mostly nutty, with some more autumn spices and nutmeg.

Pours red with a generous tanish head that seems to stick around a while. Smells of yogurt, spices, and oranges. Tastes bitter at first with a nice peppery note. Some maltiness and tarte hints are present. Tingly pepper mouthfeel and a decent slightly bitter finish.

19AUG05 On tap at the Freeport location. Seemed to be the house favorite, so I figured I’d give it a try after being disappointed by the Black Fly Stout. Poured a dark amber/orange with a small off white, thin head. Slightly spicy and alcohol taste. Boring.

(Bottle, best by 9/06) Deep amber. Nice biege head, so-so lacing. Aroma sweet, bready. Bittering hops prevalent. Tastes pretty nice, fairly sweet. Slight watery. Finish dry. Good.

Bottle. Bright copper with almost no head. Toffee, caramel and vanilla in the nose. Pretty good, albeit light, you really have to agitate it to get a good whiff. Rather sweet taste. Malty and hoppy in a pretty good balance. Not a lot of depth in either, but good balance. Got a sense of some chocolate, some nuttiness, some bitter hoppiness, and I’m ashamed to admit I got a little bit of sweaty socks at first, but that was quickly diminished. By the end of the glass, it became dry and hoppy and went down much smoother than I anticipated. All in all, I was surprised as this was better than I was expecting.
