Commercial Description:
Technically speaking, this ale can be described as an Extra Special Bitter. What that really means is that more of everything that goes into our bitter is added to the Halloween Ale -- more imported barley and more fresh Goldings hops from East Kent in England. This strong ale is also given some extra time in the conditioning tank, allowing it to mellow considerably.

Medicinal aroma has some cherry and orange which is surprising considering this is a bitter. Very mild flavor seems a little watered down but is nice. Finishes with a cherry flavor. My thoughts are: 1) This bottle must be a fluke. 2) It tastes like orval mixed with a bitter. 3) I like it anyway

poured from a 22oz. bottle into a pint glass A: Color is a robust copper and the body is fairly murky & cloudy. A nice frothy off-white head develops but is mostly diminishing with little-to-no-lacing. Nice looking. S: Very mild smelling, and mostly of light bready, biscuity malts. Very little hoppiness if at all, yet the earthiness comes through rather strongly. T/M: A wonderful mixture of juicy citrus hops and a nice toasted, nutty body adds sweetness. A slight mild coffee bitterness comes through in the finish to round things out. Somewhat thin mouthfeel, but decent enough carbonation helps matters. D: This one was an easy drinker, and quite tasty too. I’d definitely get this again next fall season.

Pours a clear copper color with a thin white head. Aroma and flavor of malt, spices and mild hops with a bitter finish. The body is light to medium with an oily texture and gentle carbonation.

Sampled at 2007 Brewnosers’ Christmas Gathering. Brown amber colour with a mostly lasting frothy tan head. Toffee, brown sugar, and lightly spicy aroma. Toffee malts with a lightly earthy bitter finish. Medium bodied and smooth. Decent but not all that memorable.

On tap at Portland, Maine’s Gritty McDuffs--Poured a brown-amber body that was thin with a wispy off-white/beige head. Nose of minuscule spiciness and mild malts. Watery, weak mouthfeel. Weak ass beer.

Bomber - Poured a dark amber in color with a small light tan head that faded to that thin covering over the beer. Aroma is of spicy hops and faint caramel. Flavor is also spicy with hops... EK Goldings are one of my favs in my own beer. A bit watery. Has some maltiness to support the hop bitterness. OK, but a bit disappointing for this brewer, given their "premium" designation.

(Bottle) Pours a clear amber body with a small off-white head. Aroma of caramel, nuts, toastiness, and cocoa. Flavor of caramel, nuts, toffee, and light clove.

My Bottom Line:
Soft wooden and spicy hops brush against the svelte fruity toastiness of this nearly crisp and shyly festive ESB.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A veil of foam tops the clear copper.
-The relatively tranquil carbonation increases drinkability.
-The aroma is rather unattractive in its lack of seductive powers.
-A wooden hop bitterness cleanly balances out the flavor profile.
-Although this is billed as a stronger version of their bitter, it drinks as easily and doesn’t offer much in the way of bigger flavors; I’d rather go for the lighter version in these cases.

Bottle.
