This beer is much more deserving of a higher rating. Dark brown color, small off white head. Nutty, malty, and sugary taste. Finishes smooth and tatseful. I suspect reviews similar to "davidCC" below is what’s hampering this beer. Pretty much if you like bud light, you shouldn’t be reviewing beer that’s not rice based. Despite the others this is a good solid brown. I’ll defend it for sure, go try this and see for yourself it’s better than it’s rating!

On draught at Gritty McFratkids, 5/21/2005 with Muzzlehatch at the Portland location. Dulled-ruby-mahogany-German-chocolate cake-brown colored beer with a small yellow head, some retention and lacing. Mostly clear. Earthy, resinous, sour nose, with dark berries and yeasts. Nutty in flavor, with some brown sugar like malt, a medium to medium-full body, low wateriness but just not the flavor I’m looking for. Old and stale, too much sour graininess waxing to sweet sugary malt. Another thick mouthfeel. Little to no hops apparency.

May 2005, on draught at Gritty McDuffs (Portland) with the spastic and fantastic ClarkVV. Medium maple color with a smidgeon of lasting foam and perhaps a little lace...vanilla and hazelnuts create a passable, inviting nose...smoewhat acidic in the body, the nuttiness is strong but a bit spoiled-tasting and a big citrusy tang and lots of sourness come in to make the finish a bit unpleasant.

Had a mini-keg of this 1.32 gal. This is not a very good beer at all, I would not recommend this to anyone. I think i’d prefer to drink a bud light.

Clear light brown body with medium creamy off-white head. Aroma is mild sweet, caramel, light anise. Taste is caramel, slightly nutty, light earthy. Finish is fairly watery caramel. Watery light body.

Light brown. Aroma is caramelly, nutty, fruity and spicy (cumin, oregano) Fairly light bodied, with a vague maltiness and Ringwood notes. Minimal interest in this recipe shared with the Golden Lion in Lennoxville.

Bottled version (Gritty's Best Brown Ale). Somewhat "soapy" in texture and flavor. (I'm sure it's not my glass). The mild malts try to come through, but just can't quite get there. Too bad.

Sweet inviting aroma and pleasant color. Overhopped and undercarbonated. Not bad, but doesn't make a memorable impression either.
