Pours a deep autumnal amber with a light brown head. Aroma is of raisins, currant, and yeast. Flavor is med. sweet with a lot of yeastiness and some vanilla. Body is med. light and lush due to high CO2 levels. Finish is short with flavors dissipating way too quickly.

Grottenbeer is a really unique specimen--with lots of distinctive (if indistinguishable) flavors, great color and very nice carbonation. It’s not my favorite--but it’s something I’m very happy to have a couple of times a year.

Too much carbonation. It almost hurt to drink. Murky reddish brown with a long lasting head. I really couldn’t taste much past the carbonation.

Bottle shared with HogTownHarry at Smokeless Joe. Pours a murky reddish-brown with a large off-white head. Some good lacing. Nice complex aroma: some apple, banana, ginger, spices, sweet malt, alcohol and yeast for starters. Flavour is nicely balanced and smooth -- sweet, malty, spicy and fruity. Palate seemed a bit harsh at first but it didn’t last. A very nice surprise, I need to get me some to drink at home!

(Bottle 33 cl) This version brewed by "De Smedt" in Opwijk. Dark brown with a bubbly, huge head and a high carbonation. Lovely, spicy nose - almost Orval-like - with a pronounced, malty sweetness without ever cloying. Subdued bitterness. A very wellmade beer. 210501

Bottle (330ml) shared with blankboy at Smokeless Joe. Poured a murky, almost muddy darkish amber-brown with a amll slightly off-white quick-diminishing head. Aroma was complexly sweet - fruity bubblegum, banana, sweet raw sugar malt, cloves and other spices, alcohol, yeast and coriander. Fairly light bodied for a dubbel/bruin, a bit acidic in the mouth but nicely lively, spicy - flavour was sharply spicy, cloves, fruit & spices, with noticeable but not overpowering alcohol, and an initial bitterness than warmed out. Very smooth, not too challenging - pleasant.

Bottle from Stirchley Wines and Spiritts, Birmingham. Brown, with a fast clearing head. Brown sugar aroma. Sweet, nutty chocolate flavour. Thinnish mouthfeel, but a little milky too. Some sweet liqueur to finish. Overridingly smooth, but not very dramatic.

On draft at of all places Cafe Amsterdam, Anchorage, Alaska. Dark black with a monster rocky head. Big nutmeg aroma and rich spicy flavors, wood chips, nutmeg and maybe a sprig of cinammon. Awesome.
