Drnk_McDermott (1562), Downers Grove, Illinois, USA Jan 23, 2006 Updated: May 29, 2008 Bottle purchased 2004 at Whole Foods, Chicago. Hey, it’s my 750th rating, so let’s rate something from a 750 ml bottle. And that means Belgian! Pours a deep brown with golden highlights. Rocky ecru head fed by streams of bubble. Smells sweet and malty, with a touch of brett. Taste is nice, crisp golden malt. Sweet, but without the usual candi sugar overload. Alcohol warming builds very slowly. Light suggestions of brandy or sherry. Bubbly continues well down the bottle, making it pretty filling. Should be enjoyed with a good meal.
BelgianBeerGal (973), Sabbatical in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA Sep 30, 2008 75cl corked 2005 bottle. Pours a dark brown colour with light sediment and a short white head. Very spicey aroma with a little sugar too. Flavour was nice but finished a little sour and the mouthfeel was a little thinner than expected. Good but not great. FishManLA (181), Abita Springs, Louisiana, USA Sep 29, 2008 Deep reddish brown with a medium sized long-lasting head. Nose of raisins and prunes. Taste of dark fruits, nuts, sugar, and bread, like fruitcake. Bitter/sweet fruit and nut finish. This for sale in USA bottle was labeled "Grotten Brown, Pierre Celis Signature Selection" and the ABV of this batch is stated to be 6.7% on the bottle. From Brouwerij St. Bernard (so I’m confident I identified it correctly). Label graphics are essentially identical to the picture here. kempicus (186), Wellington, New Zealand Sep 19, 2008 Candy sugar and light sweet fruit syrup on the nose, intense fruitcake flavours but unfortunately this is a little tired, long journey and a long time in the bottle have taken their toll and this is not as good as i’m used to. Lots of hops/bitterness, with little sweetness. The aroma is much sweeter, with caramel and spice that is not in the flavor
