Commercial Description:
Grottenbier Flemish Ale is a unique ale produced by one of the great Flanders breweries. Pale golden in color with a white, dense foam and a flavor that is soft, creamy and slightly herbal. Aging will reveal new layers of flavor, but Grottenbier Flemish Ale is eminently drinkable anytime! A unique Belgian classic from the mind of Pierre Celis.

Corked Bottle. Pours average yellow/gold/cheddar, with a nice head and lacing. Aroma is bread, cheese, and a touch of lemon grass. Flavor is flat Pilsner, with dough and water rounding it out. Heavier-than-average palate. Doesn’t stand out; average at best.

750 mL corked bottle. Massive bubbly head covers a pale golden body that has just a hint of haze about it. Aromas are sharp and sour with clove notes. They will come at you from half way across the room. With the obvious tart notes I’m half expecting a Flemmish sour type first sip, but things are different than anticipated. The sour kick comes through on the backside and is sandwiched between bookends of banana/cloves/yeast that open and close the session. Not nearly as complex or fulfilling as I would have hoped, but not bad.

Bottle: Pale blonde, white head and lacing. Nose of nice tart yeasty banana and brown sugar. Bananas foster totally. Nice creamy toasty flavor and a snappy finish. Nice.

In a word, herbal with citrus astringency that softens as you drink it. A good drinking Belgian, though not complex and possibly below average for this brewery. Big head.

I find it funny that the best style to describe this officially on here is Belgian Ale, because this beer was as unimaginative as that moniker. Very boring, though pretty to look at. I actually didn’t even finish the bottle, not because it was bad, but because I was looking for something with more character.

750 mL caged and corked bottle. Pours a hazy brown and ruby, lightly cloudy with a small, mostly diminishing light brown fizzy head, spare lacing. Aroma is heavy malt (bread, cookie, caramel, toasted nuts), average hops (flowers, perfume), light yeast (dough, leather) with notes of average alcohol, banana, cask and honey. Average duration, light sweetness, harsh acidity, heavy bitterness, minerals. Medium bodied, slick and foamy texture, lively carbonation.

(750ml bottle) Large white head atop lightly hazed straw body, nice lacing. Aroma is medium sweet, bread, lemon. Taste is medium sweet, candi sugar, some fruit, Belgian yeast, light herbal. Light-medium body, some effervescence, alcohol well masked.

Bottled. Clear copper color with a big, frothy, but loose and diminishing, head. Spicy malt aroma with some herbal notes and a candy-like yeast character. Fruity malt flavors with some more spiciness. The alcohol tends to stick out a bit. Lingering bubblegum finish.
