Commercial Description:
Grottenbier Flemish Ale is a unique ale produced by one of the great Flanders breweries. Pale golden in color with a white, dense foam and a flavor that is soft, creamy and slightly herbal. Aging will reveal new layers of flavor, but Grottenbier Flemish Ale is eminently drinkable anytime! A unique Belgian classic from the mind of Pierre Celis.

Bottle conditioned, 330ml, from a Supermarket in Schin op Geul, NL Limburg. Orange amber with white head. Herbal spiced beer with a richer malty base than most. Some fruit, perhaps banana, and a slightly sweet finish.

Gold/orange pour with good carbonation and white head. Flavor is like a triple but not as enticing. Bubbly palate not as refined. Rating from memory.. will rerate later.

Bottle courtesy of Bu11zeye: Poured a deep orangey color ale with a nice big foamy head with good retention and some great lacing. Aroma of sweet malt is dominating with a light yeasty note. Taste is also dominated by some quiet sweet malt with light yeasty dry finish. Body is a bit oily and cloying with light alcohol being perceptible and some great carbonation. Definitely lacking complexity and a bit too sweet for my palate but then again I had high expectation from that brewer.

Let me start by saying that this style of beer in very new to me being that I am from South Mississippi. I find that this beer is a well balance of fruit and sweetness. I did not get the sourness of the previous flemish I tasted before, but I did very much enjoy this beer. The pale color with tons of carbination made this a perfect summer afternoon beer.

The Dan Journal #72. Tasted 2/10/2007. 750ml bottle. Hazy and golden hued. Lively pour. Two fingers of cavernous white head. Musty grassy saison aromas. Bubblegum and bananas. Great belgian aromas. Lively and medium bodied. Slightly astringent. Nice grassy note with a super citrus flavor. Great finish.

Lightly hazed, dark straw color with a smallish big bubbled head. Wild grass, goldenrod aromas. Hints of dough, mold, bubblegum and lemon as well. Not the best mix of scents. Light bananas, candi, wheat and light spice in the flavors. Has some triple characteristics, with the sweetness and light spice. Finish has a dried herbal bitterness. Linger has a mild pale malt quality and hints of alcohol and white pepper. A stronger golden ale. Seems like the parts are greater than the whole.

Pours amber into a tulip. Fluffy white conglomerate head leaves sheet lacing as it recedes. Lemon and herb aromas. Crisp with tingly orange peel upfront and a dry, lasting pepper and hop finish.

Shared with fordest at O’briens. 750 ml bottle. Smells of sour fruit and sweet floral arangements. Very tasty and refreshing.
