On draught at the brewpub in Mt Horeb, Wisconsin. Pours a clear reddish brown brew with a fast dissolving off-white head that leaves behind a clean top. Aroma of sweet caramel malt, a touch of milk chocolate, brown sugar and some crystal malt. Taste is medium bodied, lightly carbonated with flavors of light sweet caramel malt, some flowery hops and a touch of chocolate. Finish is sem-sweet, crystal malty with a very fainted hop character bitterness.

On tap at Grumpy Troll. Poured clear caramelly-reddish-brown with a light cap of off-white head. The aroma picked up sweet toasty caramel and chocolate with light herbal notes.. nice, but on the weak side. This was quite tasty.. toasty caramel and chocolate again with a bit of coffee bitterness to round it out.. sweet and bitter contrast on the finish. Dry on the palate with some creamy carbonation across the middle.. medium-bodied and a decent balance to it.

Dark brown color with a smallish off-white head. Lightly roasted malt and nut aromas. Similar to the Captain Fred this has a biting feel. Malty flavors with roasted and toasted malts adrift throughout. Quite dry in the finish with the bite. Certainly better than a lot of browns out there.

Draft at the brewpub. Advertised as 30 IBU’s. Poured a clear brown color with some orange shining through. Head was thin and off white. Smelled of lightly roasted nuts with a dash of brown sugar. Slightly sweet on the tongue with a pleasant nutty flavor accented by toffee and brown sugar undertones. Decent brown ale.

On tap at brewpub

I went to the Troll to give the barrel aged Maggie a try. This seemed to be a good opener. At $3.50 a pint the worse that could happen is I decide to never order it again. Having tried it I would definitely give it a try - this is a well made brown ale that is on par with most of the ones I have tried thus far.

Aroma / Appearance - A mahogany brown body with a thin head the color of white ash graced the glass that was set in front of me. Looking at it in light I observed a gradient from darkness to light. The scent of cedar chips, walnuts and mothballs struck my nose with the smells I would expect from a brown ale. In addition there was a fruity undertone of black cherries.

Flavor / Palate - Woody nuttiness washed over the palate from the first sip. Cherries and a slight bitterness soothed the senses befure the dry finish faded quickly. This is a sessionable beer. If not for time constraints I might have ordered another pint.

sitting in grumpt troll right now using thier wi-fi hotspot... draught--sampler--- this brown finishes well- for a brewpub thats a restaurant first and a brewery second, these are pretty darn good. You will probably have better, but you will definately have alot worse.
