Commercial Description:
2007 WORLD BEER CHAMPIONSHIP SILVER MEDAL WINNER. O.G. 1.070 35 IBU’s. Curly is a traditional Strong Scottish-styled ale. Brewed with Maris Otter and Peated Malt giving this beer a rich and complex malt character with a hint of smokiness in the finish. (They say hint of smokiness, although, this one's dominated by it).

Poured a reddish amber color with a small, off white head that left light lacing on the glass. Aroma of butterscotch, toffee, roasted malts, light cocoa, and a bit of citrus. Taste of sweeter caramel malts, some toffee, roast, smoke, cocoa, toast, and faint alcohol in the finish.

Thanks to hopdog for sharing this one. Pours a mostly translucent golden amber with a medium creamy bubbly off white head. Aroma of light peat smoke, toffee, some citrus notes, toffee and some caramel. Flavor was much of the same. Doesn’t exactly look like a Scotch Ale, but it was solid in taste and aroma. A little thin.

On tap at the Grumpy Troll brewpub. Hazy brownish red with a thin off-white head. Aroma of smoke, caramel and toasted malts. Flavor is more of the same. Nothing rally stood out about this one

Draft at the brewpub. The propaganda on this batch says 28 IBU’s and an O.G. of 1.065. Poured a hazy medium orange color with a thin off white head that left a bit of lace behind. The aroma was of light butter, caramel, toffee, and subdued coffee. Medium bodied with caramel, coffee, roasted malt, and subdued smoke flavors. Great scotch ale and one of the better beers at this brewpub.

Hazy amber body with a lasting head. Good malty aroma. A sweetly strong base malt is under plenty of crystal sweetness. Finishes with lingering sweetness and noticeable bitterness.

Hazy bronze body with an off white head. The aroma was iced tea with some toffee. The taste was caramel with some hints of tobacco and some smoke. Funny that I could not smell the smoke. A pretty good example of the style.

Slightly hazy amber maple color. Sweet maple and caramel nose, same flavor up front but quickly turning to smoke and burnt marinade/plastic. Arcid, peaty, and mildly sweet all in one beer.
