Flyer (111), Hartland, Wisconsin, USA Aug 24, 2008 Updated: Aug 29, 2008This is the first time I’ve been disappointed by a Grumpy Troll beer. It’s caramel-colored, but too pale for a Scotch ale. The nose has a healthy dose of something resembling paint thinner. Caramel-toffee flavors. Can hardly find any peatiness underneath the candy-like caramel and that lingering chemical smell. Possibly a bad batch, but that’s the chance you take. hopdog (4779), Lansdale, Pennsylvania, USA Aug 13, 2008 22oz bottle. Poured a medium and lightly hszy amber color with a small sized off white head. Aromas of caramel, butterscotch, lightly earthy, roast, and toffee. Tastes of caramel, roast, some chocolate, and lightly earthy. egajdzis (3086), Spring Mount, Pennsylvania, USA Aug 13, 2008 Poured a reddish amber color with a small, off white head that left light lacing on the glass. Aroma of butterscotch, toffee, roasted malts, light cocoa, and a bit of citrus. Taste of sweeter caramel malts, some toffee, roast, smoke, cocoa, toast, and faint alcohol in the finish. TomDecapolis (2545), Skippack, Pennsylvania, USA Aug 12, 2008 Thanks to hopdog for sharing this one. Pours a mostly translucent golden amber with a medium creamy bubbly off white head. Aroma of light peat smoke, toffee, some citrus notes, toffee and some caramel. Flavor was much of the same. Doesn’t exactly look like a Scotch Ale, but it was solid in taste and aroma. A little thin.
