sensory first impression: Rich, deep, roasted malty aroma - different from regular Guinness stout in this way. Head and pour are absolutely beautiful. Color is an inpenetrable black except for a ruby hint around the edge. Wow - taste is deep, malty, syrupy, cloying, and dessertish. Heavy on the tongue and surprising flavor for a 5% abv. Has overarching oak and wine flavor. This has all of what regular Guinness is missing - depth, bite, hops, flavor, and character.
Aroma/Olfactory:
Malt flavor is: caramel, syrupy, coffee, roasted
Hop flavor is: resinous, hay, grapefruit, pepper
Yeast flavor is: crumbs, leather, very dry.
Other flavors include: alcohol, tomato paste, medicine, raisin, sulfur, soy sauce, walnut, oak
Visuals/Appearance:
Color is: black, ruby highlights
Liquid is: darkest night.
Head and lace are: bumpy, frothy, tan, brown, with classic lacing.
Taste/Flavor:
Maltiness or Sweetness level is: medium to heavy
Hoppiness or Bitterness level is: medium to heavy
Sour level is: light to medium
Palate/Tactile:
Body or Mouthfeel is: full, raging
Texture is: creamy, sticky, thick, gritty, large particles, paper towel, cardboard
Carbonation is: lively
Finish is: astringent, long, syrupy, very nice.
Overall experience: An absolutely stunning beer for its distribution. I liked to punch, the bitterness, the depth, the warmth, the color, and the flavor. I did not like a slight metallic tinge, the price, or the idea that the regular stout is so deeply different than this. patricks110 (283), Alberta, Canada

| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 19/20 | Mar 27, 2008 Surprisingly, this is probably my favorite Guinness, outside of a true draught in a true pub. The draught cans/bottles don’t hold up, so I prefer to drink the Extra Stout here in the US. Lost of oak, lots of roasted grain flavor. Very complex and leaves a very satisfying mouth feel in the end. I will admit, that I enjoy this beer more when it is colder than most people say to chill it, but that’s just me. Maybe that kills some flavor, but I like it better that way. I enjoy the carbonation in this Guinness a lot. SuperDave70 (1157), Beautiful Sunny Mesa, Arizona, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Mar 26, 2008 Pours a near black color with a thin tan head. Bitter chocolate and burnt coffee aroma. Bitter flavor, yet surprisingly thin. Reminds me of a condensed, flat Guinness draught. ilovedarkbeer (1340), Dallas, Texas, USA
| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Mar 26, 2008 I had this listed under the wrong beer. extremly bitter taste. Not much flavor and has coffee notes. Large dark brown head. Decent taste. but a bitter aftertaste. Better as it warms. Earlier Rating: 6/20/2006 Total Score: 3 extremly bitter taste. Not much flavor and has coffee tones. Large dark brown head. Decent taste. jzzbassman (845), New Albany, Mississippi, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Mar 22, 2008 Bottled. Compared with all the other versions I’ve had today, this one definitely has better mouthfeel, but is still a bit bland. A bit more bitterness/ a touch of lactic sourness make this a little more interesting. BrendanC (31), Rochester, New York, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Mar 22, 2008 I’m so familiar with the draught style Nitro cans, but have from time to time picked this up and really enjoy it. Less mellow, more of a tartness or bite to it. I like the flavor, but it seems to be a little more watery than the draught. Still good stuff. SamGamgee (1434), Santa Cruz (La Selva), California, USA
| 2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 4/10 | 4/5 | 3/10 | 2/5 | 7/20 | Mar 21, 2008 Updated: Dec 21, 200812oz bottle. Dark brown with a beige head. Dough, burnt toast, and metal in the aroma. The flavor is a little roast, some tartness, surprisingly sweet, and a little wine bitterness. Fuller and more lively body than the draught version, but still pretty thin. Definitely not as good as the continental europe extra stout, but still better than the watery nitro stuff. (2.7) Rerate. Ya, its a bit livelier than the dead palate of draught, but there are some weird metallic flavors going on in the bottle I*m having right now, plus its still thin and the carbonation is too loose. Tastes more like an industrial lager with some food coloring. I guess that*s what happens when you brew with hopped malt extract in a giant factory setting. Just tried this side by side with my dad*s home-brewed dry stout because I told him that this was the original. Well, his blew this away and it was his first batch brewed on his own. I wish that they would import the extra stout that they brew in Ireland for Continental Europe. That stuff is leaps and bounds above this.
