Commercial Description:
Labatt's brew a pale ale base to which is added the unfermented but hopped Guinness wort extract. Guinness Extra Stout is brewed in Canada by Labatt under license from Arthur Guinness Son & Company. Editor's Note: It looks like Moosehead is also brewing Guinness. Bottles in the US are from there of late, but Canadian bottles are still showing Labatt. 04/23/06

The name is synonomous with Stout. Good opaque black color, creamy tan head. Smells "roasty". Mouthfeel and flavor for a stout, well, seems to be average. Nothing powerful. Roasted malts imparts both sweetness and bitterness; coffee, chocolate are normal flavors, but not up front. They blend in with the hops, with some bitterness. Still, a good stout. Nice and dry, not too sticky

like guinness. i do. the only drawback to this stout is that the flavors and characteristics do not stand out WHEN COMPARED TO a top tier micro. it’s still damn good as everything blends well. roasted coffee bitterness and sweetness mingles with a chocolate body. again, mouthfeel isn’t too big to me. it’s good, just not too heavy when compared to some other micro stouts i had. nice dry finish

Slightly better than the original, but I can go either way. I love them both. This one is a little more bitter -- and that is exactly the way I like it.

This is the perfect beer in my opinion, and the beer against which all dark beers are measured in my world. Coal-black color with good lace. Strong taste of cocoa and coffee, without the burnt taste of so many inferior stouts. Good mouth feel, no lingering bitterness. From a bottle.

This is one that grew one me as I moved through my six pack. A big fan of the original Guinness, I thought I’d check this one out. It’s dark (almost black) and full of flavor, but isn’t particulaly smooth. Had a really nice head for a stout, and left a nice lacing on the glass. Has a rather "burnt" taste, but nice complexity with sweet tones underneath. A winner for me.

Pours black with 1 inch of off-white head and loose lacing. Smells richer and smokier than regular Guiness with the typical chocolate malt and coffee notes. Tastes like it smells. A little heavier and possibly more enjoyable than the Draught. Definitely not as watery. Alcohol is noticeable, but not unpleasant.

1 pt. 6 fl oz (US) bottle with label "Product of Canada." Mostly black pour with tan-brown head. Unexpected medium mouthfeel. I’m used the Guinness with a heavier mouth feel. Just kiind of bland and watery compared to the widget cans. I just didn’t get into this bottle.

When the commercial description says ’Similar to the Draught version’ they aren’t kidding. I really couldn’t tell the difference until I compaired the two side by side before a Dropkick Murphy’s show (excellent setting for any St. James Gate beer, especially the iconic Guinness). The extra stout is more active visually right after pouring and has a slightly creamier mouthfeel with the same relatively mild taste in comparison to how it looks. (Am I the only one who expects Guinness to be much thicker from just looking at it?)

A much more substantial beer than straight Guinnees. Nice thick body, plenty of roastinesss, actually tastes like a quality stout!
