Commercial Description:
Labatt's brew a pale ale base to which is added the unfermented but hopped Guinness wort extract. Guinness Extra Stout is brewed in Canada by Labatt under license from Arthur Guinness Son & Company. Editor's Note: It looks like Moosehead is also brewing Guinness. Bottles in the US are from there of late, but Canadian bottles are still showing Labatt. 04/23/06

Pours an opaque black with a tan head that lingers. Aromas of espresso and dark chocolate malt. Taste of espresso and strong roasted malts. Leaves a bitter, stout aftertaste with the throat feeling parched. Not too bad, not very adventerous or complex, but o.k.

This beer poured nicely, but the head disappeared rather quickly. The taste was slighlty different from the draught Guinness, it had more of a bite. I enjoyed it, but I would like to try it out of a tap rather than a bottle.

This is the beer that convinced me that Ales are not for me. I think the aroma is alright, and as for appearance, there is something about beer that looks like coffee that turns me off. Even the flavour wasn’t that appealing to me. I found this to be a slightly bitter beverage. Even the mouthfeel felt very thick and strong with little in the way of carbonation. I’m the only person I know who doesn’t really like Guinness so it’s not you people...it’s me.

Pours black, little head. Minor aroma of coffee and chocolate. Very bitter flavor that sticks with you. Very characteristic roasted malts that hit you in the face.

Pours an opaque black with a pillowy tan head that retains fantastically. The flavour is sweet toffee, coffee and roated malts which aren’t very intense, but still pleasant. The palate is a bit watered down for a stout, or compared to other craft stouts brewed here in the states. Either way, this is a great beer considering its accessability and popularity.

Bottle; New Brunswick, CA; Could be Labatt, could be Moosehead. Roasted malt aroma. Nearly opaque black color with ruby tints at the edges. Frothy tan head that laces. Medium bodied; lots of carbonation. Starts a bit sour, with roasted malt. The finish is dry, light touch of coffee, and mostly the remnants of the roasted malt. The sour got lost along the way. Doesn’t have the burnt toast I seem to remember from years ago. Ok, but many American stouts are as good or better. Guess I’ll have to get my hands on one from Dublin. Imported Guinness from Canada almost seems misleading.

Very similar to the draught in flavor and style, but lacks the unique creamy smoothness that its cousin has. Rich roasted malt, oatmeal, and coffee. Non-dememo aroma. Somewhat bland. Decent enough brew, just not as complex as some of the other stout offerrings out there.
