| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Apr 16, 2009 Slightly sweet aroma of chocolate malts and a tiny bit of coffee. Taste is very similar to Guinness Draught, but it is a little bit stronger and more bitter. Tastes more like a stout. Overall I prefer the Draught because it is smoother, and it is more unique. This extra stout has to compete with all other stouts, so it doesn’t seem as good by comparison. altehkiller (71), , California, USA

| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 5/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Apr 13, 2009 Fine beer. Stout, but not exactly what I would expect from an "extra" stout. Good beer, but not excellent. studhamster (11), Idaho, USA

| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Apr 11, 2009 pours a dark, dark brown with a tan head. a rather weak aroma of sweet malts, coffee, dark chocolate, and hazelnuts. flavours of Dark chocolate, dark coffee, biscuits and nuts, with a basementy, almost leathery component, complimented by generously bitter hops. tekhna (106), California, USA
| 2.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 4/5 | 10/20 | Apr 11, 2009 For a king of the beers, this is nothing to write home about. Weak, a little bit of roast but nothing enduring, Dishwater and cheap malt base undergird this overrated swill. Some nuttiness and bitter.
"But it’s so much better on tap in Ireland." Gimme a break. smcolw (344), Wayland, Massachusetts, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Apr 10, 2009 Guinness created the category stout with this beer. By definition, one would expect it to score well if not the best. Honestly, I’ve always found Murphy’s to be a bit smoother, richer and creamier. This glass was well-poured by the bartender--two thirds high, rest, then finished. The head was two fingers thick, light beige and produced beautiful lace. The color was dark, dark brown, nearly black.
The aroma was dark malt with strong coffee and biscuit notes. There was also a slight yeast smell. This was far subtler than I expected. This might be my only real disappointment.
The taste features sweet, malty flavors up front followed by a hop balance. The aftertaste offers a lingering burnt, black patent malt. The liquor is viscous and rich. While not as creamy as some stouts, it is a very full bodied. Overall, an excellent beer that commands respect from beginning to end. angrypirate06 (709), Texas, USA
