Commercial Description:
The basis is an unfermented but hopped Guinness wort extract shipped from Dublin, which is added to local ingredients and brewed locally. The abv may vary.

There is also another Guinness FES at 6.5% alcohol, brewed in Kenya, by Kenyan Breweries Ltd.

Editor's Note: Not sure at what point this went from 7.5% (the standard FES) to 6.5%. This entry is for Jamaican and the Kenyan FES' only - we don't know of any others at 6.5% but if you see one let us know.

Thick, rich, malty, molasses, dates and pastry dough in the aroma with a light floral component and a pleasant dark roasty undercurrent. Jet black body with some mahogany highlights at the edges crowned by a fluffy pillow of fine bubbled tan head that lasts throughout and laces beautifully. Thick rich chocolate, doughy malts, some raisins, and dark pit fruit lead through to a very assertive roastiness with a slight sourness in the after taste. Medium full body is quite luscious, creamy and smooth without being thick or syrupy. Moderate carbonation and a dry lasting finish. Pint glass. Cellar temperature. Bottle (Sep-05).

A very nice break from all the Red Stripe that is everywhere in Jamaica. This country definitely lives up to the stereotype more than anywhere else I’ve ever been. Glad to have this amidst the few other options they have there.

Sampled from bottle. My samples were the 6.5% version brewed at D&G, Kingston JA, WI. Pours thick, opaque, black with a thick, sudsy, tan head. Aroma is simple: just sweetness reminiscent of molasses and a hint of coffee. Slightly bitter flavor with rich toasted malts, mocha and some brown sugar. Full-bodied and well-carbonated. Suprisingly easy to drink. I drank mine on the beach in a humid, 88 degree temps and they still went down easy. Best of all, I loved the look on the bewildered Jamaican bartenders’ faces when my wife would order a foreign extra stout. Priceless.

Courtesy of Springslicker <P> Aroma is caramel, chocolate, raiisn and roasted malt. Deep black with a two finger thick mocha head...very Guinness looking. The fore presents prunes, raisins, burnt pumperknikela nd roasted malt. Finish is very toasty and raisin sweet. very smooth mouthfeel. I wish Guinness draft tasted like this. Feels like an Imperial Schwarzbier. Very nice.

If you’re ever in Jamaica, forget about Red Stripe and grab yourself a Guinness - the Jamaican version is one of the best stouts I’ve ever had. It has a great roasty flavor, nearly perfect appearance, and just enough alcohol to give it a nice little kick. Oh and forget refrigeration, this beer is best served the way the locals like it: at around 80 degrees!

Bottle at Knutsford Court Hotel, Kingston, JA. Good oily black colour and consistency. This has a strong, slightly sweetened roast flavour, with a element of real roast power. Very easy to drink and smooth. After Red Stripe all week, this is deliciously full and satisfying.

Bottle (Jamaican version) in Georgetown Barbados. Almost black brown with a large tan head. Smells of dark roasted malt, molasses, coffee and a note of sweet fruit.. Tastes as smells with cocoa overtone.and a fairly predominant dry/sour character, A good quality stout with some oomph to it, Glad I found it.

First, it pays to have a boss who’s Jamaican and is willing to bring back beer when visiting his family. Now onto the beer. Been dying to try this ever since I knew it existed. Pours near black with a frothy walnut colored head. Aroma is like toasted bread and brown sugar mixed. Lovely! The flavor is wonderful as well! Bittersweet chocolate blended with heaps of roasted malt and a splash of coffee. Totally different from what we get here in the States. The palate is odd. Starts off smooth but then gets sort of acidic in parts and then very dry. Finish is bittersweet and woody with more of the roasted malt coming through. A revelation in the Guinness world. My bottle is 6.5% and is made by Desnoes & Geddes (Red Stripe). Good beer!
