Commercial Description:
Higher in alcohol content than other Guinness products, this stout has a strong, oaky, complex flavor.

Editor’s Note: This is the standard FES. Sometimes it is imported from Ireland but more often it is brewed locally. This version is most common in the Caribbean and Africa. All versions from those places, save for Jamaica, Nigeria and Ghana should be rated here.

Bottle, from Sainsburys Jan 2007. Jet black, excellent rocky beige head with good condition. Creamy coffee , butter and some slight bloody iron notes in the nose, roast coffee, chocolate and toast in the mouth and a suggestion of tartness toward the end. Dry roasty and powdery in the finish with some lingering sweet creamy coffee notes.

Bottle, bought in Ireland. Dark malty aroma, nuts, oak, coffee. Dark, dark red-brown, with a recognizable head. Taste of bitter nuts, chocolate. Nice.

Thanks to Marianne and Kenni from www.g2b.dk for this one. It’s pitch black with a nice brown and creamy head. The aroma has notes of toasted bred, roasted malt and prunes. The flavour is delightful and the mouthfeel is oily. It has notes of bitter chocolate and licorice mixed with prunes, a bit of smoke, sweetness and oak bitterness. It’s a complex and utterly delightful stout!!

It is the best Guinness. Smells malt and smooth coffee chocolate. Real good brew. Drink this beer.

The best of the Guinness range IMHO. More robust than the extra. Coffee, liquorice. Smoky finish, almost sour, warming aftertaste.

Ruby highlighted black, lumpy thick tan head. Molasses aroma, bran muffins, dates. Full, lightly roasty flavor. Rum, kind of a chewy chalky quality. Alcohol apparent, but not aggressive. I’ve never met an FES I didn’t like.
