Commercial Description:
Gulden Draak is a dark brown Triple Ale, which makes it an exception among the Belgian Triples. The second fermentation offers the nice creamy head, the full body and all the vitamins of the centuries old brewers yeast. It is a "thick" beer, that you can actually "eat" to adventure the complex taste. Gulden Draak balances a natural malt toffee-like sweetness with a mellow happiness and some hoppy accents. The aroma is round, sweet and reveals the 10.5 alcohol by volume.

Initial nose is alcohol and harsh molasses. As the head settles, it takes on a more refined aroma with Belgian candi sugar. Very dark, reddish brown, nearly opaque, with a large creamy off-white head. A body this darks looks unique poured out of a white molded bottle. Excellent lace. This brew is the epitome of a strong Belgian Ale, as it is a very strong tasting ale with distinctively Belgian characteristics. The alcohol is a bit harsh. Fairly dry and fairly one dimensional. I’m not really enjoying it.

Poured from the bottle into a trappist glass to drink. The aroma was a blend of some dense fruits, maybe cherry and plum, with some earthy hops, a toffee effect, and a yeast character too. A dark, opaque, rusted copper color with a minimal bubbly off-white head that was quickly gone. Nicely mixed taste, with the sweet-bitter fruits, a slight cherry effect, and a modest sourness too. Very lively and fizzy on the palate, with an active mouthfeel and light alcohol-induced burn. Slightly thin and watery, but very busy in the mouth. A very high quality beer, with a masterfully-controlled high alcohol content.

Deep purple in the glass with a persistent head that’s just off-white and medium-bead. Aromas drift up, cherries, dates, plums, candi sugar and caramel. A nice mellow malty palate is balanced out by some lemony, herbal acidity. There is some vinuous grape and orange, too, and some yeasty spice on the finish. I am duly impressed with this beer -- one I had never tried before. Hides its alcohol tremendously well.

[on tap at EBF 2008] Fruity aroma that may be a bit sour--almost like white wine. Almost clear copper with a lacy, thin cover. Fruity and sugary flavour with white grape, cherry and orange juice notes. Ethanol at the end along with some bitterness. Medium body, moderate carbonation, nutty finish.

33 cl bottle poured to trappist glass with amber/brown body and thin caramel colored head that slowly dissipates. Aroma is malt and figs. The taste is sweet with surprisingly thin mouth-feel. Slight alcohol aftertaste that warms the belly. Overall an excellent beer (don’t chill it too much)

(Bottle, Stockholm Beer Festival, 27 Sep 2008) Dark reddish brown colour with brief, beige head. Malty nose with notes of dark fruit, raisins, prunes and dark cherries. Malty taste with dark fruit, prunes, raisins, sweet malt and a decent spicy/herbal bitterness in the finish. Full bodied. Definitely on the sweet side with lots of alcohol shining through. Nice, tasty and warming.
