Commercial Description:
Once, every farm in Norway was required by law to brew its own ale. All of that ale had a natural smoky taste because the malt was kilned by fire, and most of it was spiced with juniper berries. Norwegian Wood, a recreation of that traditional style, is made by the "Hand Brewery" - four guys brewing in their spare time, on an absurdly small scale.

Bottle. Pours dark brown with a generous tan head.Smoked malt comes first to the nose, followed by a touch of juniper. Light smoky complex flavour, nuts and caramell, ends bitter and slightly sour.

Pours dark brown with a big beige head. Aroma of caramel, smoked meat, spices and some sweet candy. Smoke flavor with some spice and sweet caramel. Nice body and a really good beer.

Nice aroma of malts, smoke, berries. The appearance is an attractive deep chestnut brown, nice tan head. The flavor has the nicest qulaities of smoked beers, the flavors of smoke, malts, nuts, junper berries. The finish is like inhaling the smoke of a campfire. This is a nicely crafted beer in its own right. However, I am really given over to traditional ales. I love the idea of trying recreations of beers from ancient times. This was very enjoyable.

500ml bottle from west lakeview.....pours a dark semi-opaque amber brown with a thick and fluffy light beige head....aroma of juniper, wood, smoke and a fair amount of nuttiness..... flavors of caramel malt, nuts, and a sour bitterness in the finish. sweet overall profile. crisp lively carbonation. generally pretty decent. i would have this again if given the chance but wouldn’t go seeking it out.

Bottle. Pours a medium red, very large and lasting tan head. Aroma is sweet and maybe a touch of smoke. Flavor is more of the same, Juniper is more pronounced, but not like in Gin, it’s mellow not as cloying. Some touches of wood. Finish is very unique, dry, smokey and somewhat refreshing.

500 ml bottle thanks to dchmela. Pours a ruby red color with a murky body and a medium light brown head that dissipates into a fizzy bubbly mix. The aroma is mostly smoke, some caramel malt maybe. The flavor is interesting; smoky and earthy, some berries and fruit, a bit of sweet strawberry as it warms. Lots of interesting nooks and crannies here, unusual and nice. The idea of a ’farm beer’ really appeals to me.

It looks and smells great, but it leaves a taste like roasted walnuts and smoked fish. I would try it again, but the first bottle almost tasted skunky. I’ve had other beers from this brewer, so I don’t fault the quality. It just didn’t sit well with me.
