Commercial Description:
Once, every farm in Norway was required by law to brew its own ale. All of that ale had a natural smoky taste because the malt was kilned by fire, and most of it was spiced with juniper berries. Norwegian Wood, a recreation of that traditional style, is made by the "Hand Brewery" - four guys brewing in their spare time, on an absurdly small scale.

Pours with a five+ finger, thick light tan head that fades slowly and leaving traces of lace. Cloudy deep amber color, yeast left in bottom of bottle. Good carbonation, medium bodied. Smoky, caramel nose. Flavor is sweet, woody and smoky with some caramel. Pricey at $11.50 for a 500ml bottle from Tully’s Beer and Wine Wells, Me.

Bottle, 8/07. Aroma of generalized fruitiness/berriness, occasional wafts of smoke (spreading as it warms), and some marshmallow. Flavor tons of smoked wood. A veritable campfire with lots of spiciness flying about. Malt still evident alongside the smoke and spices though, and increasingly distinct berry notes follow as well. Finish very nice and smoky. Good stuff.

Bottle, batch 86, brewed 8/07. Pours a dark murky brown with a light tan head. Aroma of spices and spruce. Flavor of spices initially, some sweet fruitiness, and smoke in the finish. An interesting and tasty beer!

From 2007 bottle. Musty woody aroma, with some juniper and smoke notes and light grass hops. Mild molasses or caramel sweetness in there, too. A very rough, raw aroma, but it grows on you. Dark dark brown, clear, wtopped with foamy light tan lacing lasting head. Medium heavy watery body with quite effervescent carbonation. Starts with decent sweetness that seems like light molasses or burnt caramel. Woody notes and smoky flavor comes in pretty quick, with light juniper taste though it’s not huge. Finishes with pretty good bitterness from hops and smoky grains or juniper. Dry with light caramel sweetness and a touch of alcohol. Pretty nice ale, though not as tasty as a gotlandsdricke.

Bottle. Pours a muddy brown color with a fluffy off white head. Aroma of smoke, wood, and light roasted malt. Tastes of smoke, wood, and light hops and roasted malt. Has a thin dry smoky finish. A different and unique beer.

Sampled 11/1/08. Batch 100. This traditional ale pours a deep amber color from a 50cl bottle. Medium sized white foamy head with excellent retention and nice lacing. The aroma is slightly smoked malts, wood and juniper berries. A medium bodied ale. The malts are smoky and roasty with some malt sweetness. The hops are earthy and piney. Interesting mix of smoked malts and juniper berries. Nice balance. Lively carbonation. Tannins from the wood come out as it warms. The interesting mix of flavors makes this a very interesting beer. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly bitter and woody.
