DarkElf (2650), La Jolla, California, USA Aug 8, 2008 19-Jan-08 (Draft: Connoisseur’s Session, 2008 Great Alaskan Beer and Barley Wine Festival in Anchorage, AK) Earthy hay aroma is most prominent, with some chocolate, coffee and roast, but oddly for a stout, these are more background flavors. Some roast in the flavor, light sweetness, finishing with some milk chocolate. The finish is easily the best part of this stout. Medium body seems too thin, dry, medium in carbonation. Very dark brown in color and nearly opaque. The tan head settles to a film and a wide, bubbly ring. As stouts go, this one is on the mediocre side. nahthan (134), Oakland, California, USA Jan 3, 2006 From multiple growlers filled at the brewery while in Haines, 12/2005. Rich, Deep, complex, but still pretty clean. A slight fruitiness from the yeast, with a touch of diacetyl. The finish is on the dry side. Nice woody/mapley flavours of a homebrewed style stout that you never taste in a commercial stout. Very low hop flavor and bitterness, allows the nice roasted grain flavor to shine through. Haines brewing Co. apparently sells more of this than any of their other beers, and it shows. alaskanwarren (271), Edgewater, Colorado, USA Aug 17, 2004 A fantastic stout. Dark roasted flavors abound, but not bitter, more of a creamy taste. Don’t drink it too cold. Let it warm up a bit. Highly drinkable. OldGrowth (1269), Cary, North Carolina, USA Aug 11, 2004 From growler, Good nose, roasty, carmel chocolate. Orangy blackish brown. small beige head. Bittersweet flavors. Chocolate, roasty, molasses. Medium body, tad creamy. Drier bitter finish. Very tasty. Had it as part of tour of brewery. Brewer called it a foreign extra stout JoeMcPhee (3692), Jackson Heights, New York, USA May 25, 2004 Very dark black colouring with a thin light-tan coloured head. Served to me a bit too cold to get much aroma right away, as it warmed however I got some malty molasses aromas appearing. Flavour however was fantastic. Smoky whiskey malt flavour, molasses and brown sugar and just enough bitterness to round the whole thing out. Had a superior oily texture that I couldn’t get enough of.
