19-Jan-08 (Draft: Connoisseur’s Session, 2008 Great Alaskan Beer and Barley Wine Festival in Anchorage, AK) 2008 release. Broke Dick Ale is Haines Brewing’s offering for the Poor Richard’s national celebration and is made principally with corn and molasses. The aromas of corn stalks and green plants are already making me ready to move on to another beer. Brown sugar and molasses in the flavor, but the beer isn’t sweet. As for the base, it’s not corn or grain, but definite corn stalks with a "green" finish. Medium "plus" body and medium in carbonation. Murky brown in color and cloudy, capped by a tan head that settles to a wide ring. All I can say is, thank goodness I didn’t live back then because this stuff just isn’t very good.

@ Great Alaskan Barleywine Festival ’06. OK nose, sweet. Molasses mainly. Hazy lite orangy brown color, small to no head. Sweet flavor. Kind of roasty, molassesy. Thin body, smooth mouthfeel, little twang of hops as it finished. Eh? I’m not enjoying this style of beer. Sorry to the founding fathers if this is what their beer was.

On tap at the 06 Great Alaska Beer and Barley Wine Festival. Deep amber with a whispy yellowish head. Roasted grain nose with an almost smokey burnt sugar smell. This has a dark sweetness to it of burnt caramel, molassess, and a noticable raw grain taste. It is an odd beer, but I enjoyed it.
