From a 1.5L Bottle. Sampled at the RBSG tasting. Pours a muddied dark brown color, topped with a thin ring of wispy off-white head. Intense aroma, saturated with bourbon, brown sugar, and dark malt melanoidins. There’s an intense dark fruit character that comes through as slight oxidation in the form of figs, prunes, and rummy raisins. Hefty doses of oaky vanilla. Medium-full bodied, softly carbonated mouthfeel. Flavors are excellent up front, bringing out notes of chocolate nougat and raisins. Toward the finish, the flavors get incredibly oaky, contributing a slight tannic astingency. Faint leather and black pepper. Finishes relatively dry and oaky with a mild alcohol warmth. Very oaky beer overall, but delicious. The bourbon barrel character and age have completely transformed the base beer, leaving behind only a shadow of it’s original self in a very faint whisper of smoke and chocolate flavors.

Pours hazy brown to black. Dense malty and alcohol roasted aroma. Smooth malty and woody flavour solid barrel note with a nice malty touch and a lingering roasted finish. Smooth yet with a light alcohol presence into the finish provding a lasting and slight burning feel.

Pours dark brown, with a small off white head. Smells of sweet, smooth creamy vanilla, caramel, and some dark sweet fruits as well. Really dug that nose. Tastes a little oaky, still quite smooth and creamy on the palate as well. The vanilla/caramel mixed with the dark fruit and malt really seems to have done some nice things together. The bourbon is there, but it really blends in well with these other flavors. You get it alot in the finish, while the front is fruitier and sharper. Killer.

Bottle at RBSG grand tasting. Thanks to whoever brought this. Pours brown with no head. The aroma is rich with whiskey, oak and dark fruits. The taste features mellow bourbon that is well balanced with roasted barley and dark fruits. The mouthfeel is smooth and creamy with no noticeable carbonation. The finish is long and sweet with lingering vanilla and whiskey. Overall: One of the elusive greats, thanks for opportunity to try it.

At RBSG, pours a carbonation free, flat and viscous burnt caramel brown. Absolutely zero head. The nose is rich with bourbon, oak, vanilla and leather. The flavor follow suit, but has a substantial amount of heat that lingers. Awesome beer.

Tasted from bottle at RBSG. FINALLY! I’ve seen this empty bottle at WeeHeavySD’s place several times, and ogled the raves and reviews in the ratings. I love these sweet HotD barleywines. Wow. Through the roof smokey oaky aroma. HotD rocks the aroma. Sweet and delicious. Brown color. Lowish carbonation.
