The aroma is sweet lemons and fresh orange slices/juice with a light pickled ginger. The flavor is wheaty and bready. Tart lemons and light orange oil. Some sort of herbs and honey. Light ginger. Very unique. Very surpised when I had a sip of this. Sweet, carbonated, creamy mouthfeel. IIPA meets Hefeweizen? dwyerpg (2537), Las Vegas, Nevada, USA

| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jan 9, 2007 Found the aroma of pine trees stood out along with some citrus. Cloudy copper colored body with big head on pour from 22 oz. bomber. Left some lacing also. Real good dose of citrus hops only on the finish left more of a dry citrus aftertaste. Refreshing breer thanks Craig. jgb9348 (2499), Arlington (Pentagon City), Virginia, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | May 10, 2009 Hazy amber coloured body with a thin off-white head. Aroma of strong hops, malt and alcohol. Very full bodied - chewy mouthful; Strong as hell, with alcohol coming through most of all. Very strong hops in the taste with an overly bittered hop flavour and a good malt backbone. Aftertaste bittered from the hops of course. Overall, good throughout and definitely nice to try! I sampled this beer on draught at Henry’s 12th St Tavern in Portland, Oregon on 09-September-2006. Sharp hoppy aromas of grapefruit and pine. Flavor is grapefruit, rye, and some yeast in the finish. Airy and light with medium body. Very bitter finish. Not too bad. A reasonable pour into my 25cl tulip glass gets me a three-finger thick head that overflows the rim of my glass just a bit. The head has quite a bit of staying power, is quite fluffy, leaves a nice layering of lace on the sides of my glass and forms some interesting structures as it slowly recedes. The beer is a honey / light amber color that shows a clear, bright copper color when held up to the light. The aroma is nicely hoppy, though it has me noticing that my nose is not quite working as well as usual). Aromas of pine, a touch of menthol, as well as a light herbal note are noticeable up front, but there is a solid, citrus-like backdrop of grapefruit, bergamot, lychee and lemon zest.
The beer is nicely hoppy tasting, much more so than my nose was able to tell. Notably, the beer is also not infected (like my last bottle of this), which is really quite nice. The hop character is fresh and punchy with ample flavors of grapefruit, bergamot oil, and lychee up front; it finishes with a sharper, more herbal focus of tongue clinging pine and hemp oil, with a touch of menthol there as well. There is a nice, solid, and up front, clean bitterness throughout the flavor profile, it gets a little dirty (in a good way) towards the finish as the more herbal hop components kick in. The beer is nice and light bodied for a beer of this strength, which is perfect for the way I like my Double IPAs; it does have some body to it though and is able to carry the ample hop character quite well. There is a touch of alcohol noticeable in the finish, it provides a touch of warming as well as a peppery bite.
This is quite nice when it is not infected, I am quite glad I was able to get another batch of this.

| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jul 22, 2006 22 oz bottle, via Dubbercody. Pours a hazy dark gold colored body under a fizzy one finger white head that faded to a thin film. Aroma is all grapefruity and piney hops. There must be some malt in there, but you wouldn’t know it. Flavor is piney and aggressively bitter with some bready and doughy malt. An unusual IIPA in the malt profile, none of the sweet caramel and toffee present in most IIPA’s, though the lack of the jet fuel levels of alcohol are abscent as well thankfully. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with nice soft carbonation and a creamy texture up front that fades to a slightly sticky finish. Overall, a little off-kilter from the norm. Just what I expect from HOTD. This really drank better than it rated though I must say. Keep the awesome beers coming HOTD! kmweaver (2461), Sebastopol, California, USA

Crisp, tart, pleasant - but the bitterness could be slightly more forward? As Kinz noted, it’s lacking a certain unidentifiable something.
