Hair of the Dog Blue Dot Double IPA

This was a great hopped up IPA. I liked the flavors that the hops where giving and this was not a IPA that was just to show off how much hops one can put in a beer. This had a complex malt character and gave off a great flavor. Great job Alan.

Fresh Fall 2007 batch. Pours a very cloudy glowing orange-amber color with a small, foamy, off-white head. Minimal spots of random lacing dot the glass. The aroma shows a toasted, slightly buttery caramel malt base accompanied by a variety of resinous pine and citrus hops. The flavor follows suit. Toffee emerges, as do toasted grains, followed by more citrus and pine hops. Medium-full bodied and fairly smooth, though a little astringency does show through on the back end. Solid brew from a solid brewery.

22oz, spring 2007 bottle. thanks to davecooks for this. pours hazy orange with white head. nose is medicinal and citrus. mainly citrus, peach, and lemon notes coming through in the flavor. decent but seemed a little infected, once again Hair of the Dog showing itself again. i can’t wait to re-rate a fresher bottle some day.

Pour is opaque golden orange with a dense big sticky tan head...smell is orange, sweet and hints of pine...taste is sweet and malty up front with a nice bittersweet finish...

Thanks to batkins for this brew. From a 22 ounce bottle, this poured an opaque honey color, but absolutely flat. The aroma is very hoppy and so it the flavor. It’s pretty much hop juice.

From LIC, Aarhus, DK. Bottled. 040508. Grapefruit bitterness and aroma. Alcohol present but swamped by a malt sweet body

Bottle; purchased on sale at South Bay DL. Poured a pretty paler than expected amber/dark gold color with a small, short lasting white head. A bit of lacing. Aroma of grapefruit, pine, caramel, spice/pepper, with a bit of sweetness. Flavor was borderline IPA/IIPA. Just really drinkable, which isn’t too surprising based on the low ABV. Not overly hoppy or too intense. Good caramel backing, not too predominant, just right. Hops were mellow, but enjoyable. Hops were piney, citrus/grapefruit and some floral after taste. Soothing finish. Not much sweetness. Very enjoyable.

10/01/2007: Hair of the Dog Blue Dot Imperial India Pale Ale pours a transparent golden yellow with tinge of orange. It has a lively flurry of vigorous carbonation and a massive, dense head that never fades. A good amount of foamy cloud-like lacing is left on the sides of glass. The sticky aroma has sweet mandarin oranges with touches of pineapple and pine. The flavor is lightly sweet and fruity at first. Actually, it tastes like a Belgian Tripel, but then a bulky amount of bitterness hits hard and settles on the roof of the mouth and in the back of the throat. The bitterness has lots of pine and sharp grapefruit hops that last through the finish and then lingers on the palate. There is even has a touch of dry grassy hops. Overall, the hop profile is quite a complex and does not disappoint. There is some mild, smooth, even alcohol that comes through in the flavor as well. The alcohol is not exceptionally high or forthright, but it can still be felt! The medium-light body is slightly sticky. This is a really good Imperial IPA that is sure to please anybody. It met my expectations and I really enjoying drinking the entire bottle!
